How to find and join a digital community with your Students' Union

freshers2020homepage

Finding your community will look a little bit different this year, with a lot of events and activities taking place online, but those communities are still out there and waiting to welcome you virtually into their group.

Connect with us and meet new people through social media

If you want to keep up with everything going on here in Plymouth then make sure you join the Official SU Freshers Facebook Group Starting Plymouth Uni in 2020 where you will see all the latest updates plus posts from other students reaching out to connect with others on their course, with similar interests or in the same accommodation.

Meet likeminded people and give something back to the community

Volunteering not only provides the opportunity to expand your skillset, boost your CV and increase employability post-Uni but it also enormously benefits your wellbeing. The friends you make, the fun you have, that great feeling you get when you realise that you're making a positive difference to someone else's life. We hear time and time again from students how their volunteering has massively enhanced their student experience and made their time in Plymouth so enjoyable.

Your time is precious and that’s why our volunteering opportunities are flexible to fit around your studies.

Browse a full list of opportunities online and join our amazing team of student volunteers on the UPSU volunteering website.

Browse communities online

If you’re looking to find your Uni family, the first place to look is on the SU website. On there you’ll find information about all the different student groups we have at the University of Plymouth.

With over 50 sports clubs and 100 societies, ranging from Harry Potter Society to Synchronised Swimming Club there is bound to be something for almost every interest. These groups are all run by students, for the benefit of students, and are a great way to find, rekindle or continue whatever passion you may have.  From their pages, you will also be able to see details on membership, products available to buy and any upcoming events where you can meet with the committee or members to find out more.

Our student groups are all working hard to adapt their offer to the Covid-19 environment and making sure every event or activity they run is safe for the participants. That is why initially you may be meeting people online, but they will also start to put on face-to-face activities that meet the current guidelines when they can.

Start your own community

If you have an interest or passion that isn’t covered by one of our existing student groups, why not start your own? We are always happy to support in setting up new societies and clubs, and you can find out how to do that on the UPSU website here.

Stand alongside other students and make your voice heard

Your students’ union is built and shaped by you, the students and your voice are essential in defining who we are, what we do and why. Our incredible network of democratically elected (by you!) student representatives, including your Sabbatical Officers, School reps and Course reps, listen to and champion the opinions and views of the University of Plymouth students, implementing real change and improving the student experience.

Find out more about your representatives, their work and how you can get involved via our Student Voice page here.

Online events organised by your SU

As well as those events organised by student groups if you are missing going out and meeting people we’ve organised a host of online events which are all free to attend. These are a great opportunity to have some fun and meet random students from all over the University and have a laugh while doing so.

View the full schedule here.

Freshers’ Hub

We know that when you first start at University all the new information you receive can be overwhelming so this year we’ve condensed it all into one web page your Freshers’ Hub.

On the Freshers’ Hub, you’ll be able to see all the events coming up, run by both us (your SU) and the University as well as those being run by students. You’ll also be able to find quick links to student groups (clubs and societies), important updates, advice, information about representation and everything you need to explore your new city.

If you are having trouble connecting with a student group or finding out more about what you love then we are here to help! Contact the SU through social media or emailing info@upsu.com and we will always be happy to point you in the right direction.
