Varsity 2021: The biggest sporting event of the year is back!

homepagestudentwins

Starting next Wednesday, 5th May. The Plymouth Varsity is an annual competition between students at the University of Plymouth and Plymouth Marjon University.

Due to the pandemic, this year's Varsity will look a little different. Unfortunately, we won't be able to welcome spectators to the fixtures as we usually would but you will be able to watch every game and match via live stream and cheer on your teams from the safety of home.

Together we'll be raising money for our individual charities - here at UPSU we'll be raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust and Plymouth Marjon will be raising money for Young Minds.

Check out a full list of fixtures and keep up to date with scores on our Varsity Hub page:

Our chosen charity, Teenage Cancer Trust

Teenage Cancer Trust was chosen as our charity for last year’s Varsity which unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The charity was nominated by the University of Plymouth Football Club (UPFC) as it’s a cause close to the Club’s heart:

Why did you choose to support Teenage Cancer Trust?

“We suggested Teenage Cancer Trust due to a member of the club, who unfortunately I didn’t get to meet, but he is a massive name – Ben Murphy. Unfortunately, he passed away of cancer in 2015 and obviously the club’s motto is “One Club, One Family” and he never left that so Teenage Cancer Trust was the most fitting option for us.”

- Mitch Laughton, Men’s Football 2nd Team Captain

“Teenage Cancer Trust is something that’s very close to our Football Club’s heart, especially with Ben Murphy passing a couple of years ago. We obviously supported it with ‘Shave or Dye’ – hence the reason my hair’s blonde! It is massively important especially considering how many young people get diagnosed with it every day so it is something that we definitely wanted to get behind and that we wanted to push for.”

- Alangel Joseph, Men’s Football 1st Team Captain
