UPSU has reclaimed the Varsity title this year. After losing the crown last year all of our sports teams were determined to get it back this time around.

The annual sporting event between Plymouth University and Marjon took place in March 2022 and April with Men's and Women's first-team football, with 19 matches over 11 different disciplines involving more than 500 students.

Varsity is the biggest sporting event of the year in the city involving 1000's of students, either taking part or supporting, with the two big fixtures of rugby and football taking place at Plymouth Albion and Plymouth Argyle.

Varsity originated as a challenge between the University's men's rugby teams in order to raise money for charity. Varsity itself is steeped in history with years of competitions taking place. Over the years the competition has grown into a multiple discipline sports competition, giving over 500 students the opportunity to showcase their skills in the sport they love all in the name of the charity.

Each year Varsity raises a large amount for charity through contributions from ticket sales as well as donations. This year the chosen charity for UPSU was: Devon Mind

Here is what Mads Morton your current VP Activities had to say about Varsity 2022:

"Our first proper varsity in 3 years, and what better way to finish than bringing that trophy home where it belongs.

I am so proud of all our teams, the way they conducted themselves, and the fire they showed in their games. There were many nail-biting fixtures, and it was a close start, but we really pulled through towards the end and finished with an amazing 25-13 win against Plymouth Marjon’s University.

However, Varsity is more than just the score. It helps bring people together who may not usually cross paths, it raises money for amazing charities, and it teaches us that passion and heart can mean more than just winning."
