The University of Plymouth Shooting Club welcomes new members whether they've shot before or not and with first class coaching we can make anyone an excellent shot. We shoot every Wednesday during university sports afternoons with fantastic social events in the evenings, competitions at weekends and international trips abroad! The clubs ethos is very much family based – everybody knows each other and that’s just the way we want it to be. Come and have a chat with us at the Freshers Fair this year or get in contact with any questions you might have.
At the beginning of the term, we encourage new members to come along to meet the committee, existing members and find out a bit more about the club over a few drinks! Thereafter, socials are generally held after Wednesday shoots and are organized every week. Regular socials involve bar crawls and themed events with us often heading to the likes of Pryzm, Switch, and Walkabout. Throughout the year we hold club tie events such as the Christmas meal and an end of year presentation evening. Furthermore, we encompass socials around competition events such as BUCS and Oxford, in which we spend the weekend away - shooting by day, partying by night. In addition this year we are also planning on offering a social trip abroad.
Training sessions are held at the beginning of the first term, kick-started by a low-cost taster session for new members. Tuition is offered in the following weeks on a regular basis to give everybody some experience with firearms handling and general shotgun safety as part of our commitment to safety within the sport. Safety is taken seriously and the committee includes BASC-insured officers. Coaching is provided on a weekly basis at this stage to bring everybody up to the same level from which we are then able to take you to casual shoots and competitions. Casual shoots are often held on Wednesday afternoons and Sundays for all members to take part. BUCS, the Christmas Cup, Aberystwyth, intraclub and the school's challenge are all events that we encourage members to enter and annually take as many people to as possible – whether they be complete amateurs or registered CPSA shots. The club has had real success in these events especially in the last few years, in which our mixed team was able to secure first place at the Christmas Cup. Competitions are evenly spaced throughout the year and members will have the opportunity to enter these nearer the time – there is NO selection process to worry about since we encourage all levels to take part. Furthermore, we endeavor to take part in an even greater variety and a number of competitions this coming year. As of last year, the club successfully set up an annual charity shoot for new shots offered to all students from the university – offering coaching from CPSA affiliated professionals and students alike, in which last year in excess of £1000 was raised.
