We are University of Plymouth Big Band (UPBB)! Originally set up in 2005 by a dedicated group of students who wanted a musical outlet within the University life, Big Band has grown in popularity and musical quality. We are a very welcoming group and allow people of any musical background or standard. All you need is interest and enthusiasm. We play everything from Jazz, Swing, Funk, Latin, Contemporary and much more!
We have weekly rehearsals on Monday evenings from 19.00-21.30 in the Rolle Building, Room 015.
Come and meet us on at the Societies Fair on campus!
We’re running two free Give-it-a-go Sessions in September and October. Drop us a message via the links below for more information.
We have regular gigs within the University and in the wider Devon area having performed at local bars & pubs, The Student Union, University and Society Balls. We also compete against other universities in the annual South West Battle of the Big Bands!
We also enjoy fundraising for charity through gigs, collaborating with other societies as well as annual events such as Movember. This last year (2016-2017) we raised over £2000 for a range of charities including Marrow and Plymouth Music Zone.
We hold regular socials aimed to bring everyone together through our common interests! We have both drinking and non-drinking socials with previous including: the traditional introductory white t-shirt nights, pub crawls, watching the fireworks and going bowling. Our socials are organised by band members and we are always open to suggestions. We usually go to our local, The James Street Vaults, after every rehearsal on Monday where Big Band members get discounts! Come and join us!
Once you’ve signed up as a member, don’t forget to join our current members page on Facebook to make sure you know what's coming up each week!
