Black History Month 2020 - A year in which the lived experiences, challenges & triumphs of Black people across the world are being listened to, shared & creating change

October has always been an exciting one as it celebrates Black History. This national celebration aims to promote and celebrate Black contributions to British society, and to foster an understanding of Black history in general. Its origins go back to the 1920s and the establishment of Negro History Week in the United States. The theme for this year’s UK Black History Month is 'dig deeper, look closer, think bigger' and the events and discussions will emphasise the need for us all as a community to pay tribute to this theme.

This year’s Black History Month is more important than ever since the death of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and the multitudes of Black people, who have lost their lives at the hands of law enforcers in America and around the world #saytheirnames. The events this year aim to continue conversations highlighted by the Black Lives Matter movement this summer.

The University of Plymouth Students' Union and the University of Plymouth will be joining in the annual celebration of Black History. Many of the events this year will continue the conversations highlighted by the Black Lives Matter movement earlier this year. The events will be open to all University of Plymouth students and staff, providing the opportunity to engage with topics like the BAME attainment gap and black history in Britain.

Join in the annual celebration of Black History Month – October 1- 31st, 2020
