UPSU take the Varsity crown for the 5th consecutive year

University of Plymouth Students’ Union has reclaimed the Varsity Championship from University of Mark and St John for the 5th year in a row, with a final championship score of 22-14.

The annual sporting event between Plymouth’s universities took place this March, with 18 matches over 11 different disciplines and hosting over 500 student athletes. The championship was decided on the last day of the competition with 10 matches taking place in 1 day.

Varsity is the biggest student sporting event in the city involving 1000’s of students taking part and supporting, with the two big fixtures of rugby and football taking place at Albion and Argyle grounds.

Originating as a challenge between the University men’s rugby teams to raise money for charity, Varsity is steeped in history with years of competitions taking place in the city. Over the years, the sporting programme has grown to feature a wide range of sports played at both institutions

Each year the event raises money for charity, contributions through ticket sales and donation. This year the chosen charities for Varsity were UPSU supporting HeartSWell, a South West charity committed to supporting heart patients, their partners and carers across the Westcountry. With Marjon raising money for the Wave Project, who help young people to reduce anxiety and improve confidence through surfing!

Vice President of Sport at UPSU, Philippa Williams
“Varsity is a great time of year, bringing excitement, tension and a sense of community to the University calendar, emphasising the importance behind our universities’ sporting teams. Varsity is an amazing event that brings together a range sports to raise money for charity whilst celebrating the achievements of athletes from both institutions. It was the second time i have played in Varsity for my Hockey team and it was great to win with my team and my Uni ”
