As a part of the University of Plymouth Student Union, we are a sports club run for, and by, students at the University of Plymouth. Judo simply translates to 'the gentle way', meaning that although you are learning vital skills which can be used in a defensive situation, you will not leave training battered and bruised as could be expected when hearing the words martial arts! Any level of players are welcome, from complete beginners to black belts.
Joining the University of Plymouth Judo Club will provide you with the opportunities to:
- Have fun while doing exercise
- Learn new skills
- Meet new people
- Compete as part of an international sport or train as a hobby
We are currently offering two classes a week and a range of regular social events throughout the year.
Whether you are looking for a fun way to do some more exercise, expand your social group or represent your University in a variety of local and national competitions, the Judo club is for you. We offer a range of sessions covering training, fitness, competitive training and practise and we follow an international grading system to help prepare you for competitions.
Come find us at the fresher's fair held on campus each year, or pop into one of our classes.
Classes are held in Thomas Pitt's Gym, Gibbon Street, Plymouth, PL4 8BZ
Mondays 18.00 - 20.00
Fridays 19:45 - 21:30
Anyone wishing to give Judo a go can enjoy their first session for free. Those who wish to continue have the following membership options;
Half-year - £35
Full year - £60
These prices work out at just under £2 a week, or under £1 a session if you come to both sessions a week! This makes us one of the best value for money martial art clubs at the university and is cosiderably cheaper than practising judo at an external club. and these include all classes and mat use.
New members can receive vouchers for massive discounts on kit and BJA membership which are a requirement for anyone wanting to take up the sport.
The club runs socials every couple of weeks to a range of venues across Plymouth. Previous social themes have been Rubik's cube and Christmas jumper. There are also weekly drinks after the monday night training, which are a great chance to get to know everyone after training. We also hold non-drinking socials like bowling and trampolining.
