The University of Plymouth Ice Skating Club (UPISC) was founded in 2015 to bring together a group of people with a passion for ice skating and figure skating. Providing a fixed venue that members and non-members alike can freely skate, practise their skills or even embrace a few dance routines. The club has a weekly run session at the Plymouth Pavilions indoor ice rink every Saturday, located on Milbay Road, Plymouth, as well as members taking part in various other unofficial skating sessions throughout the week.
What started as a small club run by a group of close friends has now had hundreds of members throughout the years from beginners to seasoned & qualified skaters and people of all levels in-between. This allows us to become a springboard in ice skating development with members on-hand to provide high quality free training and practise sessions to sharpen those skills.
UPISC has still stuck to its roots with our Saturday evening £3 sessions still at Plymouth Pavilions from 6:00pm – 7:30pm. If you’re unsure about joining the club and you missed the taster session, then you’re welcome to turn up any Saturday to give us a try for £6 as a taster session.
We’re a very social club as we can talk and meet new people throughout the skating session, whether we’re wearing skates for the first time or trying out backwards crossover skating as a new trick. It’s a very relaxed environment with friendly people which makes it the perfect place to meet new and likeminded students. After our skate sessions most of us go out to eat together somewhere close such as McDonalds or Weatherspoon. With our plan to have a minimum of fortnightly socials split between drinking and non-drinking so that everyone is catered for, you can be assured that plenty of fun is guaranteed.
During club sessions we have qualified first aiders on site and on the ice at all times with the support of the Plymouth Pavilions ice management team as well. The Plymouth Pavilions team are also on hand and on the ice throughout all sessions. We also have dedicated helpers to help you get started if it’s your time venturing onto the ice.
You are more than welcome to bring your own skates with you to all sessions. This results in a discount when attending Plymouth Pavilions sessions outside the club, but no discount when attending the club. If you don’t have your own skates then do not fear, skate hire is included free with our sessions, so you don’t need to worry about any upkeep or maintenance, and your skates are always ready and waiting for you. If you do decide to get your own skates then we have lots of experienced members and staff on hand to help guide you in the right direction in terms of size, fit and type of blade to help you make the right decisions.
During sessions there are a variety of lockers available for a refundable 20p, refunded at the end of use.
Every week at least one committee member will be at the top of the SU at roughly 5:15pm, leaving at 5:30pm to walk down to the ice rink with anyone who wants to go down as a group.
We look forward to meeting you all and seeing you on the ice!
