The University of Plymouth Dance Club (UPDC) offers classes in ballet, tap, contemporary, hip-hop, jazz, heels and Afro-Caribbean. Classes happen weekly during term time and cater for everbody, from complete beginners to more advanced dancers. We have both a recreational and competitive side to dance, so whether you would like to attend classes casually or be a comitted member of the competition team, you will fit right in!
This year we are planning one showcase during semester two for everyone to perform in. This gives an opportunity for both recreational and competitive dancers to showcase their hard work and improvement throughout the year. It also gives you a chance to perform for family and friends and raise money for the club/our chosen charity. We encourage everyone to get involved with showcase as it's a great way to bond as a club and show everyone what we're made of!
As well as our regular classes, we have an advanced competition team made up of ballet, tap, jazz, wildcard, contemporary and hip-hop squads. The biggest dance competition we compete at is Loughborough University Dance Competition, which is the biggest University Dance Competition in the UK. Last year, our ballet squad took home 1st place and our contemporary squad took home 3rd place. This is the best Plymouth has ever done at a dance competition, and we hope that this year will be even more successful! We also aim to compete at Cardiff University Dance Competition again this year, after taking home 2nd place for our Wildcard dance last year. Auditions are held at the start of the academic year for the competition team and full commitment is compulsory for squad members.
