Welcome to the Plymouth University Wilderness and Expedition Medicine Society. Also known as PUWEMS.

PUWEMS is a friendly and inclusive community, welcoming students from all courses who enjoy the outdoors. Recognising the demands of university life and extracurricular activities, we offer a flexible approach, encouraging members to engage with the society at their own pace, without the pressure of attending every calendar event

Our Aim:

At PUWEMS, our mission is to encourage a passion for wilderness and expedition medicine in a supportive and engaging environment. We offer enriching experiences where members can immerse themselves in learning how to manage a diverse range of medical scenarios, both critical and routine, in remote environments. Through workshops, lectures and conferences, we equip our members with essential wilderness skills which are further honed during trips and events throughout the year. Additionally, we provide invaluable networking opportunities within the field of wilderness and expedition medicine.

Socials and Events:

Our events are not just educational, but also social, providing an ideal platform for members to make lasting connections with like-minded individuals. Whether it's a workshop, evening event, or an outdoor excursions, there's always a chance to learn new skills and put them to the test in realistic scenarios whilst making friends along the way. After a day of exploration in smaller groups, we come together for a communal meal cooked by the committee and drinks and games to follow.

Our trips encompass iconic locations such as those on our doorstep like Dartmoor and Cornish coast and further afield like the Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia, and international destinations. In addition, we participate in national wilderness medicine events like SWMUK and Wild Trials. Furthermore, we have an array of other social events throughout the year to ensuring there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Fundraising:

Fundraising is at the heart of PUWEMS, and we take pride in our annual charity challenge which not only tests our physical limits, but also contributes to meaningful to charitable causes. An example past challenge was the 108-mile Dartmoor Way in 48 hours, which raised £3200 for organisations like Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team and The Trevi Foundation.

Moreover, our annual Christmas lecture evening is a highlight of our calendar, featuring inspirational speakers from the world of adventure, accompanied by festive treats like mince pies and mulled wine. This event serves as an opportunity to raise funds for vital services such as the Devon Air Ambulance and Dartmoor Search and Rescue Teams.
