Between the 19th and 26th of October 2019 the UPSU Islamic Society hosted their annual Charity Week on the University of Plymouth campus raising £10,267.85 to support children in need and orphans around the world through Islamic Relief

Charity Week as a part of Islamic Relief began as an annual volunteer-led campaign launched by a group of students in London back in 2003. 16 years later, it’s now a million pound campaign held annually in the last week of October, where over 200 institutions raise vital funds for orphans and children in need in a range of countries suffering the effects of poverty and conflict. The UPSU Islamic Society takes part in the week each year with hundreds of students involved across campus.

Throughout the week the society hosted varied activities focussed on raising money:

  • 19th October:  Bucket Collection in City Centre
  • 20th October: Treasure Hunt in City Centre
  • 21st - 25th October: Bake Sale
  • 21st October: Dodgeball competition in collaboration with the Dodgeball Society
  • 22nd October: Gameshow Night
  • 24th October: Girls Night
  • 24th October: FIFA football tournament
  • 25th October: Movies Night
  • 25th October: 5 a Side football tournament
  • 26th October: Charity 5K run

For myself, this is my last year at Plymouth University (hopefully) and so it is also my last time that i am fully involved in the Plymouth Islamic Societies running of Charity Week. I have been part of this society and helped run this project since 2015 and it has been one of the biggest experiences of my life. It has taught me a huge range of skills and showed me the unity and power students are capable of.

Reddin Ahmad, President of Plymouth Islamic Society

"full of excitement, a great way to make new friends"

First year volunteer and society member

"Charity Week showed how many different types of people can come together and unite for one cause and help raise money for those who are less fortunate around the world. A very fun and rewarding week in which we grew stronger as a community, however ultimately not forgetting why we were there which was to help raise for our brothers and sisters around the world who are in need of help"

"A week where students sacrificed time, effort and sleep to unify with both the University and Plymouth community in their love of others. In order to touch the lives of people across the globe they organised and took part in events across the week to raise funds for: the fight against cancer,  the treatment of hepatitis, the education of children, and the emergency relief for those in unstable countries."
