Student-Friendly Acitivities For Summer

If you’re staying in Plymouth over the summer and at a loss for how to spend your time outside of university, look no further! We, your President team, have been searching the internet to find the best events that are going on over the summer, suitable for a range of budgets.   

Mount Edgecumbe American and Classic Car Show   

  • When: 2nd August, 10am-4pm  

  • Where: Mount Edgecumbe House and Country Park  

  • Cost: Free entry, unless arriving via car  

Taking place in the gorgeous grounds of Mount Edgecumbe (accessible via a 10 minute boat trip from Royal William Yard), this event is perfect for all the car fanatics out there or those just looking for something a little different!  

The British Firework Championships   

  • When: 12th and 13th August, from 5:30 pm  

  • Where: Plymouth Hoe (although the fireworks can be seen from across the city)  

  • Cost: Free to watch  

The incredible British Firework Championships are set to return for their 29th year in August. Two nights packed with live entertainment, food stalls and incredible firework displays. What more could you need?   

Seafest Plymouth

  • When: 12th- 13th September, from 10am  

  • Where: The Barbican, Sutton Harbour and Royal William Yard  

  • Cost: Free entry!   

Our annual celebration of the sea is back once again. From incredible food stalls, entertainment and events, if you’re a fan of all things ocean related, this is definitely for you! What a way to round off the summer in true Plymouth style.   

Yard Sessions  

  • When: 17th July, 14th August and 11th September, 5:30pm-8pm  

  • Where: Royal William Yard  

  • Cost: Free!   

Set against the stunning backdrop of the stunning ‘secret gardens’ in the Yard, dance the night away at live music events that are running across the summer for no cost! If you love live music and want to escape the hecticness of the main city, this is the place to go.   

The Barbican Art, Craft and Food Fair  

When: 18th-19th July, 15th-16th August and 19th -20th September, 10am-4:30pm   

Where: West Pier Barbican   

Cost: Free entry!   

Who doesn’t love a good food and craft fair? Looking out over the sea, this is the perfect way to celebrate local businesses right in the heart of Plymouth! If you’re wandering around the Barbican in the sun, make sure to check out these fairs as they run throughout the summer.   

Our Story with David Attenborough  

When: Until September 2nd, various dates and times   

Where: Market Hall, Devonport  

Cost: Tickets from £24.50   

Step back in time with this immersive film experience, exploring the history of planet Earth. Taking place in Plymouth’s world-class Immersive Dome, this incredible screening examines the 4-billion year awe-inspiring history of the earth, using a 360° projection system. If you’re looking for something a bit different to do with friends, or even as a solo date, this could be just what you’re looking for.   

Park Yoga   

When: Every Sunday until 13th September, 9:30am-10:30am   

Where: Devonport Park   

Cost: Free!   

Ran by the charity Park Yoga (think Park Run, but less knee-shattering), free one-hour yoga sessions are run every Sunday morning at Devonport Park – just a 35 minute stroll from campus! The perfect way to unwind from the week, or stretch out the tiredness from a late Saturday night.   

Good Food and Craft   

When: First Sunday of every month, 10am-3pm  

Where: Royal William Yard   

Cost: Free to enter!   

Fancy a sweet treat in the sun or looking for a perfect gift? The Good Food and Craft Fair is the perfect solution! The Yard is a 40 minute walk from campus, or you could take a boat trip on the new service from the Barbican. However you decide to get there, you definitely don’t want to miss out on the market this summer.   

Independent Films at Plymouth Arts Cinema  

When: Various screenings over the summer and beyond  

Where: Plymouth Arts Cinema (Arts University Plymouth)  

Cost: Tickets from £5  

Are you a cinema lover, but hate the price tag? These screenings are your perfect solution! Head down with your friends, and support the independent film industry at an affordable price - you might just find your new favourite movie!  

Tinside Lido   

When: Until 13th September, 10am-6pm   

Where: The Hoe  

Cost: Tickets from £5.25   

The historic Lido is open for the summer once again! This really is the perfect place to spend an afternoon in the sun, and you can finish off your swim out on the sun terrace cafe, or have bring a picnic along with you – just watch out for the seagulls!
