University of Plymouth Jiu Jitsu Club members share details of the team's first grading of the academic year...

"On the 4th of December, we embarked on a thrilling journey as the University of Plymouth Jiu Jitsu Club conducted its first grading of the academic year.

Grading in martial arts is more than a test; it's an opportunity to showcase not just technical proficiency but also confidence and character.

Participants are challenged to execute specific techniques, navigate high-pressure combat scenarios, and find the joy in applying their skills even when energy reserves are running on fumes.

Our style of Japanese Jiu Jitsu is a modern adaptation, steering away from the traditional encounters with samurai and their swords, knives, and staffs. Instead, we focus on scenarios involving bottles, fists, and grabs—aligning with the challenges of contemporary conflicts.

This year's grading witnessed 18 Novices aspiring for Yellow, 3 Yellows advancing to Orange, 1 Orange stepping into the Green territory, 3 Greens challenging the Purple level, and 2 distinguished Purple belts striving for Light Blue.

The rigorous 3 and a half-hour grading tested the mettle of every member, each contributing significantly to both personal growth and the club's success. Following this challenging trial, Sensei Maqueen, an esteemed club alumnus and the impartial Sensei overseeing the grading, bestowed 16 high yellows (including many Yellow 2s and Yellow 3s), 5 Oranges of varying rank, 1 Green, and 3 Purples. Though our Purple belts narrowly missed attaining Light Blue, their determination shines through as they eagerly prepare for an interim grading in January.

Special recognition:

Two standout members deserve special recognition. Noticeably, only 16 out of 18 Novices achieved their Yellow; impressively, the two that did not get their Yellow, Danila Mackevics and Michah Donnan, in fact jumped to Orange—a rare double grading. This achievement speaks volumes about their dedication and the exceptional coaching prowess of Sensei Matt.

Congratulations to all who participated; your commitment and accomplishments have set a remarkable standard for the club. We eagerly anticipate the continued success and growth of each member as they embark on their martial arts journey.
