Icons Award Winner 2021 - Women's Hockey Club

homepage

Congratulations to the University of Plymouth Women's Hockey Club committee, who have been awarded their Icons Award for their efforts through an extremely difficult year.

The UPSU Icons Awards celebrate our Sports Clubs and Societies that have gone above and beyond throughout this year. There are certain criteria each group has to complete to win their award which is then approved by the UPSU Sports and Societies Teams. This year we have seen so many amazing things happen throughout our student community, including the efforts of UPLHC.

Who are the Women's Hockey Club:

"The University of Plymouth Women's Hockey Club is a student sports club. We have 4 ladies teams that compete in local leagues as well as our 1XI and 2XI also competing in BUCS leagues.

From April until the end of May we join with the Men's Club to form Mutley Knight Raiders, our extrememly fun summer league.

We do a lot of fundraising for charities from running the Plymouth 10k and half marathon, charity sports matches with other clubs at Uni and many many bakesales!"

Women's Hockey Club Successes:

This year the University of Plymouth Women's Hockey Club has gone above and beyond for its members during a difficult year for students. The Committee has reviewed, completed and signed off all documents required by the Sports Department at UPSU and uploaded them onto the SU website, as well as hosting a successful Annual General Meeting (AGM) in March where members voted in the next committee for the club.

The club has complied with all of the SUs policies and procedures, kept in touch with the Activities Coordinator throughout the year and ensured that all core committee members attended compulsory committee training. They have registered all trips, tours and events with the SU and demonstrated effective financial management with their decisions around their membership fees and budgets.

The Women's Hockey Club sent regular emails and scheduled meetings over Zoom with the Sports Department to ensure the club communicated with the SU throughout the year. The club held a lockdown bake-off club challenge, raised money with the Shoebox Appeal in December in which, as a club, they donated 12 boxes to children in need of them. They got involved in a university-wide Run Across The UK challenge, running a total of 222 miles as a club over the weekend, raising money for Cancer Research UK. Which in total, with other universities, raised a grand total of £2752.50

The club has organised successful social media campaigns throughout the year, including a Meet the Committee campaign on the club's Instagram and a welcome zoom Q&A in September to meet their new members. The committee had great communication with their members through the club Facebook page as well as each team having a private page and group chat for team discussions.

They held regular Zoom socials through the UPSU website and their own Facebook pages, both as a Women's Club and occasionally with the Men's Hockey Club too, while also encouraging their members to vote for who they want to represent them in the UPSU Elections, one of the biggest events of the year for Plymouth students!

On top of this success, the Woman's Hockey Club completed the additional criteria for their Icons Award including up-skilling club members with first-aid, coaching and umpire qualifications, in order to improve the quality of their Hockey Club membership. They have worked closely with the Men's Hockey Club throughout the year organising socials together through both clubs social secretaries and even formed strong links with Devon Hockey Forums and England Hockey in meetings during the year to keep up to date with the relevant information surrounding all things Hockey!

It’s amazing to see groups like the Women's Hockey Club work their hardest to build on their club, especially in a year where students need each other the most! We’re proud to award this Icons Award to the Plymouth Women's Hockey Club, congratulations!

Congratulations from all of us here at UPSU!

The University of Plymouth Woman's Hockey Club has been awarded their Icons for all the amazing work they have done over this year voluntarily and on top of their own studies, this couldn't be more deserved and we can wait to see what you bring to the Students' Union next year!

Stay tuned and keep an eye on our social media channels over the coming weeks to read a profile of each student group that has achieved Icons this year.

You’ll be able to find out more about what they did to receive this award and how you can get involved in September.
