Icons Award Winner 2021 - Paediatrics Society (PUPS)

homepage

Congratulations to the Plymouth University Paediatrics Society committee, who have been awarded their Icons Award for their efforts through an extremely difficult year.

The UPSU Icons Awards celebrate our Sports Clubs and Societies that have gone above and beyond throughout this year. There are certain criteria each group has to complete to win their award which is then approved by the UPSU Sports and Societies Teams. This year we have seen so many amazing things happen throughout our student community, including the efforts of PUPS.

Who are the Plymouth University Paediatrics Society:

"As PUPS, we want to foster a space for medical learning and understanding the holistic care of the child across multiple disciplines.

We hope to put on lectures, workshops, a regional conference, and fundraising events generally to raise child health awareness and we’ll all learn something new along the way."

Paediatrics Society Successes:

This year the Plymouth University Paediatrics Society has taken a difficult year and got through it delivering its usual successful memberships to its new and returning members.

PUPS has reviewed, completed and signed off all relevant documents required by the Societies Department and updated their SU website page. They missed no more than 3 Societies Forums throughout the year and held a successful Annual General Meeting (AGM) to vote in next year's PUPS committee. The society has complied with all UPSU policies and procedures and kept in regular contact with the relevant Activities Coordinator within the SU, as well as all committee members completing their compulsory committee training and registering all trips, tours and events with the students’ union while demonstrating effective financial management with good use of their budgets and funding.

The Pediatrics Society has had consistent engagement with the Students’ Union throughout the year via email and interacting with the UPSU official social media and hosting a SU Instagram takeover, they hosted regular socials for their members including popular Teaches and a Paediatric National Conference with other Paediatric groups, alongside producing successful social media campaigns including their 'Meet the Committee' campaign during freshers week.

The society has hosted multiple fundraising events including a bake sale, a virtual quiz and a 5k challenge set for members in groups of 3 for National Pediatrics Fundraising Week, as well as showing they have communicated effectively between the committee and its members with regular committee meetings and emails out to its members on any updates. They held a Virtual Welcome Fair to meet their new members and ran successful social media promotions on Facebook and Instagram to encourage their members to vote in the UPSU Elections, for who they want to represent them in their students’ union and within the university.

And last but by no means least the Plymouth University Paediatric Society has volunteered as a Society by baking goods for bake sales which consisted of buying items, making batches and organising delivery to the right customers, they also volunteered together as a committee to pack DIY Easter Egg Hunt Packs for their chosen charity Children's Hospice South West, in a COVID safe location, following all government guidelines at the time.

The society formed a link with the Beckly Centre, a community centre for children who are physically and/or mentally disadvantaged, they are also planning on being involved with after school activities when it is safe and feasible to do so, working closely with the SU Volunteering Team to help make this happen. They have also collaborated with MedSoc for their joint bake sale for Valentine's Day Weekend. We’re so proud of everyone involved in the Plymouth University Paediatrics Society and you fully deserve this award.

Congratulations from all of us here at UPSU!

The Plymouth University Paediatric Society has been awarded their Icons for all the amazing work they have done over this year voluntarily and on top of their own studies, this couldn't be more deserved and we can wait to see what you bring to the Students' Union next year!

Stay tuned and keep an eye on our social media channels over the coming weeks to read a profile of each student group that has achieved Icons this year.

You’ll be able to find out more about what they did to receive this award and how you can get involved in September.
