From the 10th - 16th March 2024, student group Adventure and Expo took part in a Scottish Winter Skills Week in Fort William and Aviemore Scotland in order to teach members to be competent winter hill walkers and mountaineers!

Student group member, Guy, got in touch to share with us more about this exciting trip, as well as some amazing photos taken!

"Over the past week several of our members went to Scotland for a Winter Skills weekend, learning how to properly use winter tools such as crampons and Ice axes, as well as learning essential techniques for building snow belays and bucket seats.

The group had an amazing time despite the variable weather, getting out in both the east Highlands and the Cairngorms.

The group was taught by Alex Rhodes, (@summit.sense) who was incredible at teaching us how to stay safe and make good choices in the mountains.

A great opportunity to upskill and enhance the competence of our members and teach critical winter mountaineering skills. - Guy Ludford, President

This trip was the first winter trip that the club has run in at least 10 years, potentially longer, and marks a big milestone in the upskilling and competence of our members, especially following the issues posed through covid with training and teaching.

Hopefully this trip can continue to run and expand in following years and help solidify the club as a really strong and competent group of mountaineers."

A really comprehensive week developing winter mountaineering skills and building experience in adverse conditions. - Alex Davidson, club member
