UPSU is a not-for-profit, value led organisation which exists to represent the interests of the students studying with the University of Plymouth and support their wider student experience through extracurricular activity.  This is a fantastic opportunity to join the biggest commercial department of Plymouth Students' Union within a team of 4 managers, 3 chefs and over 50 casual student staff. The role will include leading the bars & catering team whilst on shift to deliver excellent service to our members and provide the best possible quality food and drink at excellent value for money for our student members.

Purpose of Post:

To ensure the smooth running of the busy Students’ Union bars, delivering customer service of the highest quality in order to enhance the student experience at the University of Plymouth Students’ Union

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To oversee and manage daily bar operations throughout the venue, in both a daytime and late night economy.
  • To act for the Designated Premises Supervisor in their absence, ensuring the implementation and strict adherence to all aspects of the 2003 Licensing Act
  • To adhere strictly to opening times in accordance with agreed Standard Operating Procedures and Policies
  • To support and assist the Bars Manager, deputy bars manager and head chef as required in the effective management of the department.
  • To ensure that no persons under the age of 18 who are, or appear to be drunk, are served or permitted to consume alcoholic beverages on the premises
  • To maintain the bar cellars, equipment and stock rooms, to ensure correct receipt and storage of deliveries, effective stock rotation, ullage management, line cleaning.
  • To ensure the provision, care and security of all bar takings and floats
  • To ensure security of all stock, fixtures and fittings and bar premises
  • To help with facilitating and implementing an ongoing training programme to a large team of part-time student bar staff
  • To deliver one-to-one meetings to bar staff as required.
  • To ensure excellent levels of customer service are always maintained, and excellent standards of product quality.

  • To carry out stock takes and assist with external stock takes
  •  To have an input with, and monitor student staff rotas and staffing levels as appropriate to operational requirements.
  • To ensure the Health & Safety of customers, visitors and staff
  • Effective implementation of promotions, liaising as appropriate with other departments
  • To work flexible hours in order to meet the operational requirements of the department.
  • To be on the floor, visible to staff and serving customers whenever possible.
  • Support the chef team with the delivery of food operations by facilitating food orders at the bar and utilising student staff to support the combined operation.

 

 

General

  • To understand and uphold the Vision, Mission and Values of the organisation and ensure that these guide and inform the work and conduct of the post holder. UPSU has a democratic decision-making process and the post holder must always respect this when carrying out his/her duties
  • To keep UPSU’s strategic plan in mind at all times, aligning all work efforts with the plan
  • To be knowledgeable of the UPSU Constitution and Bye-Laws, as they apply to this post, including any legal requirements.
  • To work in accordance with all UPSU policies and procedures, including Health and Safety, Staffing Protocols, Financial Procedures and the UPSU Equal Opportunities Policy
  • To work in accordance with UPSU’s Environmental Policy, contributing to UPSU’s Green Impact Award (accredited through NUS) in line with recommendations made by the Green Champions Group
  • To undertake duties from time to time as requested by the Union Management that may be reasonably considered within the scope of the post
  • To attend from time to time, as required, meetings as necessary to meet the requirements of the post
  • To attend all Staff Development Days and training as required. Flexibility in working hours may be required to accommodate this
  • To contribute to the positive image of the Union with students, the University, stakeholders and the local community.
  • To be flexible and adaptable in a changing environment, the role holder may be assigned to other areas of the Students’ Union to meet the needs of the service. This will in turn provide development opportunities in which to broaden experience
