We are a well-established and highly motivated club that offers the ancient discipline of Muay Thai - the art of 8 limbs. Muay Thai owes its roots to Thailand, where it is their national sport. Muay Thai is an exciting ring sport comprising of specialist punches, powerful kicks, standing and flying knees, stand up grappling and throws. It is a devastating discipline widely used in MMA. We boast incredibly experienced coaches and trainers, some with over 30 years of experience that have trained professional fighters. We welcome all abilities and all ages, you will be taken from the basics and quickly go onto learning skills that have been passed down for generations. Our tailored classes provide those with no previous experience to quickly gain intricate technique and boost their physical ability. For those with experience, and without, the only limit to how far you can go is your willingness. We regularly visit other universities to take part in controlled sparring events to showcase our sport and add a competitive edge to those that wish to take part. We are the biggest martial arts club in the university and this is simply down to the professionalism of our coaches and the friendly atmosphere we create to ensure everyone gets the most out of their training session. We provide boxing gloves and other protective kit at no extra cost to you.
Our training times are; Wednesday 18:00 - 20:00, Friday 17:00 - 19:00 and Sunday 15:00 - 17:00. Each session costs a tiny £3 with discounts on offer if you would like to pay monthly. We invite anyone to come and simply observe a training session to see if the sport offers what you are looking for and welcome all questions and queries. Each session is run is Pitts Gym, located opposite Robbins Halls.
We have a great social scene! Here at PUTK we believe in party as hard as you train! We mix up the socials with (1) themed nights of alcohol infused madness, riddled with tasks and unfortunate challenges & (2) awesome sober socials that have included trips to TOTAL WIPEOUT, go-karting, laser tag, paintballing, film nights and bowling. This is a massive opportunity for our members to get to know one another and increase the PUTK family. Here at PUTK we like to make sure we mix up the right amount of training with the right amount of social madness, we host a planned social every 2 weeks and have 'unofficial socials' most weeks. There is usually a group of us that head for a drink after training as well, just to unwind! Previously the club has treated its members to a hugely discounted trip to watch a fight nights, which had world class fighters and received a huge amount of positive feedback from all members involved. The club has also participated in WAR adrenaline races across the country, proving just how fit and determined PUTK are!
Our events include hosting and participating in interclubs. Interclubs provide an opportunity for those that wish to showcase their ability in a controlled environment and challenge other competitors from other universities. This is a great chance to push your ability and test it against somebody else. All events of this nature are strictly controlled and participants must pass a fitness and ability test set out by our professional coaches. These events are also a really good chance to spectate and support your club and university. At PUTK we are really big on charity, we like to do a couple of events a year to help benefit others. Previous events have included the Plymouth half marathon, a 12 hour sparring session, Movember and many more. This year our intentions are to boost this exposure further; we have some great ideas that don't all include physical exertion!
