Meet David Brunskill, SU President 1968

Written by: UPSU

On Friday the 24th of June, the incoming and outgoing officer team met with David Brunskill who was the SU President in 1968.

He spoke about what it was like to be the leader of the Students' Union in a time when there were no elections, no support staff, and no computers. He had a tour around the Students' Union building and had a look at our archives where he was able to find a copy of an old SU magazine 'exchange' which had his name in it.

He also contributed a document that was typed on a typewriter. It was a proposal to the council stating that the University should become a polytechnic and that they would need to raise their membership fees to £5 to support the SUs activities.

His one piece of advice to the incoming officer team was about the importance of positive PR for students.

We love having people from our past return to the SU, it's incredible for all of us to see how much we've changed in terms of our building, our ethos, and the student community over the years. If you're reading this as a previous Sabbatical Officer, staff member, or even an Alumni who wants to explore their old Students' Union, we'd love to welcome you back and say hello!
