Black History Month is a time for reflection, a time for acknowledgement and without a doubt, a time for CELEBRATION! This national observance seeks to promote and recognise the important contributions of many influential Black pioneers across the globe.
As a student group with members that are primarily of African and Caribbean descent, we are beyond thrilled and thankful to be able to use our social media platforms (provided by the University of Plymouth) to shine a light on the legacy and achievements of all those inspiring individuals and organisations of black ethnic origins.
In commemoration of Black History Month 2020, our first initiative as a society for the month of October has been to rally up 12 enthusiastic individuals from the University of Plymouth of different ethnic backgrounds (HALF of which are our current members) to create a collage which conveys a simple message:
‘Laundry Is the Only Thing That Should be Separated By Colour.’

This quote serves as an act of support and alliance. ACS Plymouth stands in solidarity with all those who have been victims of modern-day segregation, prejudice, and discrimination because of their SKIN TONES. Colourism is a real and persistent global issue that goes hand in hand with racism. Let us use this month to not only celebrate but also educate ourselves on these pressing racial issues that are still deeply ingrained in many parts of the world even in 2020.
For this year's Black History Month festivities, we have adapted our activities and events to fit within the COVID-19 restrictions. A Virtual Cooking Demo, Open Discussion/ Debate and Afro beats dance session are some of the socials that you can expect from us throughout this month. Most of our events will be virtual so do not hesitate to tune in and keep an eye out for our events on the UPSU website upsu.com/ents
