UPSU supports our transgender and non-binary students, including their right to feel safe on campus and within the city of Plymouth. This statement is in response to a planned “feminist” event in the city aiming to discuss the Gender Recognition Act, which has failed to create a trans-inclusive environment through discussing topics that are hostile to the transgender and non-binary community. The organizing of this event has left some students feeling unsafe, unaccepted, and distressed. As a union we believe that feminism is intersectional, inclusive of everyone regardless of identity or background. The union respects and values our diverse student population, and will not tolerate transphobia. We stand in solidarity with our transgender and non-binary students.
