Our Veg Box Scheme is Changing

Due to demand, the way we run the veg box scheme is changing.

Since we introduced the weekly veg boxes, we have been inundated with students wanting to take advantage of the offer to access affordable fruit and veg. However, we only have a small number of boxes to sell each week and it takes a lot of staff time to manage the delivery.

To make the system fairer for students and less time intensive for staff, we will be moving to a co-operative model which is managed by students who volunteer their time to sort the produce and receive a veg box on a rota basis. This will mean that not everyone will be able to get a box each week but it will allow for more students to benefit from the scheme

The SU currently work with Fareshare to provide fresh fruit and vegetables at a subsidised rate. FareShare are the UK’s number one redistribution charity and collect surplus food from supermarkets and suppliers that would otherwise go to waste and redistribute into the community.  The small charge for each box covers logistical costs only, Fareshare is a not-for-profit organisation.
