Marrow Valentine’s Auction 2019

Plymouth Marrow’s annual Valentine Auction & “Take Me Out” at The Treasury Plymouth is our biggest fundraising event of the year. Each year, the auction raises more and more money for the charity Anthony Nolan so the pressure was on to make this year’s even better with last year’s auction raising £1174. But this year, it’s safe to say that we absolutely knocked it out the park; we raised over £4200 and money is still coming in!

At this event we auction or raffle off anything we can, whether it;s a donation from the local businesses of Plymouth, “students with skills” (like MedSoc’s president Maryiam who’s curry night was bought for £110!), OR even the legs of two medical students to be waxed to the highest bidder. From the auction and raffle alone we raised £1211, which is actually more than what last year’s entire event raised.

We have to give a lot of credit to 2nd year medic Pree Das, who shaved off and donate her hair to the Princess Trust, a charity that provide free real-hair wigs to under 24-year-olds having cancer treatment and raised over £1700 for Anthony Nolan since September. She’s an incredible person and her selflessness to do something so brave for complete strangers is truly inspirational. Myself and Marrow’s Vice-President Dáire also had our heads shaved on the night by the highest bidder and together raised £920.50, though we both kind of wish we had picked a warmer time of the year to do it.

We also had the return of our infamous “Take Me Out” where five brave bachelor medics answer questions and demonstrate a talent in order to win a date with a girl from our panel of bachelorettes. This year was incredibly popular; the room packed to maximum capacity to watch our lucky lads attempt to win someone’s heart, and one point an impromptu rap-battle broke out! Regardless, all five of our bachelors got themselves a date to take to one of Plymouth’s most popular eating spots (with bachelor Ian being over the moon with his free meal for two at Nandos).

All in all, it was an incredible night that was loads of fun and raised an insane amount of money which helps bring Plymouth Marrow’s total for the year to over £8000. I’m incredibly proud of my committee who helped organise in, and I can’t thank everyone who supported us enough. Here’s to next year’s Auction.

Marrow Love,
