These free pool taster sessions are the perfect way to try out a new sport in a warm and safe environment. Or if you are already a pro, these sessions are a perfect way to see what we get up to on a weekly basis!
Each session is 40 minutes, run by a friendly, qualitified instructor.
The session will involve:
- A quick swim check (if you cannot swim, you will be given a buoyancyaid for the session)
- Learning how to kayak
- Getting comfortable in your boat / being on the water
- Some fun games and activities
You will not be forced to do anything you do not want to do and the session can be taken at your own pace. If you are nervous at all, please get in touch with us as we want these sessions to be as relaxed and as welcoming as possible!
You will need to book on to each session you wish to attend.
Things to bring:
- Towel
- Swimwear (some people wear rash vests and shorts to keep warm as you will be in and out of the water a lot)
- Plastic bag for wet swimwear
- Dry clothes for afterwards
- Drink of water
Optionals:
- Googles
- Nose clip
- Any of your own paddle equipment (let us know if you are brining your own boat)
The session takes place at The Life Centre, located in Central Park and is about a 20/25 minute walk from the SU roof. There are also buses that go up past The Life Centre. If you require any assistance to get to and from pool sessions e.g. a lift or someone to walk with, please do not hesitate to contact with one of our committee members or email us at (plymcanoeandkayak@gmail.com) and we will try our best to arrange something.
A committee member will be walking from the SU roof for the first session if you are unsure on where to go. More information on this will be posted on our Instagram (@plymouthunicanoeandkayak) nearer the time.
Please arrive at the pool at least 10 minutes before the session starts in your swimwear, ready to go. Changing rooms and showers are provided there. Just let the life centre reception know you are with the university kayak club and they will let you through the gates. Thank you!
