Fencing is a unique, intense, and fast-growing sport that’s great fun for everyone. We welcome people of all experience levels from complete beginners who've always fancied having a go to high class competitors. Plymouth Uni trains in all three weapons and has fielded very successful Men’s and Women’s teams in recent years. We also take a squad to the annual BUCS Individual Championship, which is always a fantastic weekend! As well as BUCS, we do encourage all our members, no matter their ability, to try competitive fencing. Information is posted on our Facebook page about different competitions, including what ability levels they are suited to. However, it's not all about competition and if it isn't your thing, then just come along to training and have a great time with great people! Our weekly training sessions are held every Monday starting at 7.30pm and are led by top-class coaches; all equipment is provided and your first session is free.
We have a variety of social events throughout the year, including bowling, ice skating, paintballing and many nights out. We also incorporate socials into as many fencing events as we can; for example we have had weekends away in places such as Aberystwyth, Sheffield, Chichester and even Paris! If competitive fencing isn't for you, there is still a lot to get out of joining the fencing club. This year our Christmas meal is booked at Rhodes @ The Dome on Plymouth Hoe, and is set to be the best yet!
Throughout the year we have a fantastic range of exciting events. Starting this year with 24 hour fencing, during which the club takes over the atrium of Roland Levinsky for some non-stop fencing to raise money for our chosen charities. Last year we raised over £600, and we plan to beat it this year. After Christmas we then have the Alumni match of Old Teams v New Teams, followed by a dinner and usually a great night out. This year we also plan to go to Paris again in February for the X-Systra Fencing Challenge, which included two days of fencing and a day of sightseeing, all for under £200! Shortly after we come back from Paris we will be off to Sheffield for the BUCS Individuals. This is the biggest event on the student fencing calendar; we take the top 6 fencers of each weapon for 3 days of highy competitive fencing. Excluding this event, all of the others are open to all members of the club who want to have a go. For the less competitive fencers we try to take part in as many of the Devon County Competitions as we can, as these are great fun and give a fantastic taste of competitive fencing without the pressure.
