students' union awards
Welcome to the University of Plymouth Concert Band!
UPCB is a keen and friendly group of musicians who play a wide variety of Concert Band arrangements, performing within the University and around the City.
If you would like to find out more about our society, feel free to chat to us via our social media accounts, send us an email, or speak to us in rehearsal! 'Register Your Interest' through our page on the SU Website to be added to our email list!
Join us for our 'give it a go' session on the 26th of September in Rolle 018 (free of charge) and see what we have to offer!
So we can get a rough idea of the numbers of players this year, as well as the mix of instruments, please 'Register Your Interest' or send us an email/DM to let us know what instrument(s) you would be interested in joining on!
(please note we can't generally supply instruments for players to use aside from percussion, but if you don't have your instrument with you, please check with us as we might be able to arrange something!)
You can also message us on our social media platforms (Instagram and Facebook) with any questions you may have!
Here's a performance we put together during lockdown of a few of our members playing "Happy" by Pharell Williams, one of the pieces we have performed in previous years. Enjoy!
REHEARSALS AND WORKSHOPS
Our band rehearses every Tuesday evening in Rolle 018 between 6:15pm and 8:30pm. We typically host two to three concerts per year, including a Christmas concert. In previous years, we have also performed at events such as the South West Universities Concert Band Festival, the staff awards ceremonies (SSTAR Awards) and the UPSU Societies awards.
Rehearsals are typically led by student conductors from within the band, however we also organise workshops throughout the year with local expert conductors and military bands; in the past these have included the Royal Marine Band and the Salamanca Band of the Rifles. There is also the chance for aspiring conductors to gain conducting experience through these events.
EVENTS AND SOCIALS
We will be organising a series of socials throughout the year, both within Concert Band and in association with the other music societies. These include bowling, pub quizzes, and drinking/ pub socials.
Our rehearsals will run every Tuesday in Rolle 018, 6:15-8:30pm! Please remember to buy your membership (£3 for the whole year!) so that you can get your membership card!
Our second rehearsal will be on the 3rd October from 6:15-8:30pm in Rolle 18; we will also be going to the pub afterwards, or depending on interest, a night out (after instruments have been taken home of course…)
