Let the society know you're interested but not yet ready for a membership.
Welcome to the University of Plymouth Concert Band!
UPCB is a keen and friendly group of musicians who play a wide variety of Concert Band arrangements, performing within the University and around the City.
If you would like to find out more about our society, feel free to chat to us at our stall at the in-person Fresher’s Fair on Thursday 23rd September from 11am-4pm. We will also be hosting a digital Fresher’s fair session on the same day at 7pm. You can sign up to the online event by clicking on the event listed below or by using the SU’s digital Fresher’s Fair platform.
So we can get a rough idea of the numbers of players this year, as well as the mix of instruments, please fill out this Google Form to let us know what instrument(s) you would be interested in joining on:
(please note we can't generally supply instruments for players to use aside from percussion, but if you don't have your instrument with you, please check with us as we might be able to arrange something!)
Please also use the "Register Interest" button to let us know you are interested in hearing more from us!
Here's a performance we put together during lockdown of a few of our members playing "Happy" by Pharell Williams, one of the pieces we have performed in previous years. Enjoy!
REHEARSALS AND WORKSHOPS
Our band rehearses every Tuesday evening in Rolle 018 between 6:15pm and 8:30pm. We typically host two to three concerts per year, including a Christmas concert. In previous years, we have also performed at events such as staff awards ceremonies (SSTAR Awards) and the UPSU Societies awards.
Rehearsals are typically led by student conductors from within the band, however we also organise workshops throughout the year with local expert conductors and military bands; in the past these have included the Royal Marine Band and the Salamanca Band of the Rifles. There is also the chance for aspiring conductors to gain conducting experience through these events.
EVENTS AND SOCIALS
We will be organising a series of socials throughout the year, both within Concert Band and in association with the other music societies. These include bowling, pub quizzes, and drinking/ pub socials. Last year we moved many of these events online, and if restrictions return, we will continue hosting online events so that the band can remain active.
Our first rehearsal (and Give it a Go Session) will be held on the 28th September from 6:15-8:30pm in Rolle 18. Everyone is welcome!
Our first (entirely optional) social will be a friendly get together at a local student pub (the Roundabout) immediately after the first rehearsal, where you can meet fellow band members and your committee!
Our second rehearsal will be on the 5th October from 6:15-8:30pm in Rolle 18; we will also be going to the pub afterwards, or depending on interest, a night out (after instruments have been taken home of course…)
We have a large library to choose from, with new pieces every year. This includes a huge range of Film, TV, Musicals, Marching Band, Concert and Traditional music. Selections from our normal repertoire include:
- Pirates of the Caribbean
- Jersey Boys
- How To Train Your Dragon
- Colonel Bogey
- Les Miserables
- Fiddler on the Roof
- Lord of the Rings
- The Greatest Showman
We have no limit on the number of people in the band and are always happy to welcome new members and instruments! We will be happy to adapt parts to your needs or abilities. The main instruments we have in the band are:
- Woodwind: Piccolo, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, Eb Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone
- Brass: Trumpet/Cornet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium/Baritone. Tuba
