Friends of MSF Plymouth (FoMSF)
Friends of MSF Plymouth is a student society that aims to raise awareness and funds for the humanitarian organisation Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) (MSF). MSF is an impartial, international medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, natural disasters and excluded from healthcare access.
Raise awareness: Friends of MSF offers opportunities for our members to learn more about MSF and the medical issues and humanitarian crises to which they respond. We engage in a variety of awareness events such as panel discussions and debate nights to discuss the policies, politics and impact of humanitarian aid. We host educational evenings and screen eye-opening documentaries and MSF-produced films. We’re very privileged to host guest speakers; doctors, logisticians, midwives, operation managers and health promoters, who generously share an inspiring, first-hand account of their experiences working with MSF in the field. We are looking forward to hosting our third annual conference this year!
Upskill members: We provide training and education on key medical issues, remote medicine and infectious diseases in the form of workshops and teaches, both on campus and outdoors on stunning Dartmoor. Other upskilling opportunities include French language lessons and signposting our members to volunteering opportunities within the local community.
Campaigning: Friends of MSF advocate for and support the MSF Access Campaign: Medicine shouldn’t be a luxury. We mark awareness days by holding information stalls and host educational evenings such as for World AIDS Day and International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM. We are continuing to support ‘Missing Maps’ an open, collaborative humanitarian project which enables you to become involved in mapping parts of the world that are vulnerable to natural disasters, conflict and disease endemics. International and local NGOs can use these maps and data to better respond to crises affecting these areas.
Fundraising and socials: We intend to hold many socials, with the aim of raising awareness and money for MSF whilst having a good time with like-minded people! Our socials include pub quizzes, karaoke and ‘Beats without Borders’ silent disco. We hold termly bucket shakes within the city centre. All proceeds go directly to MSF.
FoMSF welcomes anyone with an interest in global health, humanitarian aid and a desire to tackle and raise awareness of global inequalities. Sign up to become part of the ever-growing Friends of MSF Plymouth family. We are very excited about the year ahead and hope you decide to join our society (for free!) We are very grateful and sincerely appreciate everyone that donates, takes part and supports our society. Your generosity enables us to play our part in supporting this incredible humanitarian organisation.
Make sure you find us at fresher’s fair and ask lots of questions!
