Varsity 2020 Cancelled

homepage

A number of National Governing Bodies have decided to suspend affiliated sports activity and recommend that all non-affiliated sports activity is also suspended. Therefore, in partnership, University of Plymouth Students’ Union and Plymouth Marjon University have taken the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Varsity. We understand this is disappointing and this is not a decision we have taken lightly, the welfare of our students and staff communities is a priority. We would like to reassure all students who have paid to attend the events, that you will receive a full ticket refund.

We are all extremely disappointed that this is the case and we would like to thank all the hard work put into this event by our staff and students.

I talk on behalf of all our students to say we are saddened by the decision to cancel this year’s varsity event but I think we are all understanding as to why this decision has been made. With the Easter holidays only a couple of weeks away we all need to be mindful of not only our own our well-being but also that of our families and friends.

This does not detract from the hard work everyone has put in. Our sports department at the SU has been working tirelessly since before Christmas to continue this annual event that is loved by so many. We look forward to this event each year as it demonstrates just how amazing our sports students are. I would like to thank the sports department, both here and at Marjon, on behalf for all of our teams for their efforts up until this point, without them these events wouldn’t even be possible in the first place!

We know that for some of you this would have been your last varsity and I have no doubt that you are feeling disappointed to say the least. The efforts of our captains in preparation for this event is second to none and it hasn’t gone un-noticed throughout our SU. We hope that this drive and passion can be passed on to your team members for next year. I am grateful that I have another year to work with the teams and captains, and I have no doubt we will come back bigger and better.

Geoffery Gulzar, President of Marjon Student Union

“I am really devastated to say that Varsity has been cancelled, this was not a decision taken lightly by the University. The effort that all of our teams have put into preparing for Varsity has been incredible and all I can say is that I am sorry that this has had to happen. In these unforeseen circumstances, it is vital that we put our student’s health at the centre of our decision making. I apologise to our final year students that will not get to experience their last Varsity.”
