Hi, I'm Summer, Chair of the UPSU First Aid Society and Unit Manager of Plymouth University Student Volunteering Unit St John Ambulance.

St John Ambulance is looking for lots of new volunteers to help with their vaccination volunteer scheme, supporting the delivery of the Covid-19 vaccine at vaccine clinics throughout Devon and the rest of the UK.

There are three roles for students to get involved with:

  • Vaccination care volunteer - Ensuring patients are supported and respond as needed to any medical emergencies.
  • Volunteer patient advocate - Meeting and greeting patients and ensuring they are comfortable pre and post-vaccine
  • Volunteer vaccinationTrained to administer the vaccine via injection to patients. For this one, you must have a minimum of two A-Levels or equivalent, which most students do.

All roles have a full training programme including some online modules and a full/half day in-person course depending on role picked. All volunteers are subject to fitness for role, enhanced DBS and some experience in caring/advising. (This could be volunteering, through caring for family, through work, just experiences to draw upon really)

Uniform, ID etc is all issued and lots and lots of support available throughout the experience. Once joined you will become members of Plymouth University unit - we run weekly training sessions and socials etc, all one big family really! After the scheme has ended volunteers are welcome to continue as part of the organisation into other roles such as event first aider.

Where can I find more information?

Recruiting has opened up to student volunteers before the general public so the sign-up link cannot be posted publically, though we can send it to individuals who are interested.

Please email to begin the application process.

We also recruit directly from our first aid society member base and all the information on how to get involved is in our closed Facebook group.

We have already received lots of interest already but of course, we would love to welcome as many people as possible!

There a weekly briefing/information sessions, the link to join these is in the events section of the First Aid societies Members Facebook Group.

What happens after I apply?

The onboarding process happens quite quickly - students complete a sign-up form, book an interview/chat with the national welcome team, and then complete their online learning and book an in-person course - which are happening every few days in Plymouth.
