The use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in producing academic work is an area that appears to be causing confusion for many students. It can be an excellent tool to support and enhance you learning, if used correctly.

However, if considered to have been used inappropriacy, it can be investigated as an academic offence

The university academic offences regulations don’t strictly reference AI use, but it may fall under one of the following:

Plagiarism, which is copying or paraphrasing of other people’s work or ideas into a submitted assessment without full acknowledgement.

Contract cheating, often called ‘ghost writing’, which occurs when another person or people are commissioned or otherwise engaged to undertake an assessment, totally or in part, and the assessment is submitted as the student’s own work.

Any other activity which could confer an unfair advantage to any candidate(s) in assessment.

Whilst the use of AI is not strictly prohibited, there are circumstances in which it can and can’t be used.

Examples of where it may be used inappropriately could include:

  • Using content from an AI program without identifying the source or correct use of quotations/referencing.
  • Presenting all or part of AI work as your own, including work paraphrased or slightly amended.
  • Presenting AI-generated ideas as your own without acknowledgement of the source.
  • Using AI-generated content as a basis for a piece of work and changing the content or structure without identifying the source.

Assessment briefs will often give information about if and how AI can be used. Your module leaders and academic should also offer further insight.

If you are unsure, don’t take any chances. Check with the relevant academic staff members to ensure you are using AI appropriately.
