Be prepared for exams
Over the next few weeks, many of you will be undertaking exams, either online or in person.
Whether you are a first year who is still getting used to sitting exams at university, or you are a final year completing some of your last exams, we are here to offer some tips to make sure that things run as smoothly as possible on the day!
1. Date and Time.
Double or even triple check the date and time of your exams.
Don’t let a simple error jeopardise things before they’ve really begun.
2. Know your location.
Make sure you know where your exam is taking place, and how long it will take you to get there. If online, how do you access it. When does the time start? How long to complete it?
If you’re unsure of anything, check in advance, don’t leave it to chance.
3. Know the rules and regulations.
Many questions may pop into your head before the exam, and it’s beneficial to know the answers in advance rather than frantically searching for guidance on the day.
For example:
What can I take in? What happens if I arrive late? What identification do I need?
What if I need a toilet break? What if something unexpected affects my attendance?
What if I have modified assessment provisions in place?
You can find answers to all of these and more at: Exam rules and regulations
4. Know the format of the exam.
Knowing the format of the exam can help you prepare more effectively. If possible, find out the type of questions that will be asked, such as multiple choice, short answer, or essay questions. Also, be aware of the time limit and any other instructions provided by your exam coordinator.
5. Read the instructions carefully.
Before starting the exam, read the instructions carefully. Make sure you understand the directions and requirements for each question. Don't lose points because you misread the instructions or didn't follow them properly.
6. Don't panic!
If you get stuck on a question, don't panic. Take a deep breath and move on to the next question. You can always come back to it later if you have time.
7. Review your work.
Before submitting your exam, review your work and check for errors or omissions. Make sure you have answered all the questions and provided sufficient detail where required. Make the most of the time you have.
8. Trust and believe in yourself
Finally, trust yourself and your preparation. Believe that you can succeed and don't let self-doubt get in the way of your performance.
