Getting your student accommodation deposit back - here's how

The end of another year is upon us and for many, attention will shortly be turning to saying goodbye to their current property.

With that in mind, here are some things worth considering to make the process as stress-free as possible!

At the start of your tenancy, your landlord or agent should have gone through an inventory which lists fixtures and furnishings. That will give you an accurate record of the contents and condition of the property. You need to ensure that you replace any missing or broken items, fix any damage that has been caused and dispose of any extra rubbish that doesn’t fit into your bins.

Make sure to clean the property to the same standard as when you moved in and if you have a garden, make sure that is also in a similar state to when you arrived. This should all ensure you get as much of your deposit back as possible.

And remember, if you do have any issues with landlords or deposits, you can contact the Advice Team who are more than happy to give relevant guidance. Including any correspondence from your landlord in relation to the issue, as well as your tenancy, will be beneficial. You can find the ways to contact here.

We have been lucky enough to be joined by Shelter Plymouth on campus a few times this year, who have helped to answer your most asked questions when it comes to student housing.

Check out our latest article with Shelter all about your rights when it comes to property viewingsfilling any unoccupied rooms in your accommodation, and what to do when it comes to getting your deposit back. You can also read more information on getting your deposit back on Shelter's website here

Shelter Plymouth will be joining us in the SU on the 1st of May from 11am - 2pm to answer any questions you may have about your student housing. Drop by and say hi!

Don't dump, donate!

Remember, if you have kitchen items such as pots, pans, crockery, utensils or small electrical items that you no longer require, you can donate it rather than dumping it.

The SU will be accepting donations at The Hive throughout the summer during opening hours, which during term time is 9am-5pm and from June 5th 10am-4pm.

All donations will be stored over the summer and made available to new and returning students at the start of the next academic year.
