Black History Month: how to get involved/what's on?

October marks Black History Month in the UK.

What is it?

Black History Month is a dedicated time to honour and celebrate the history, achievements, and contributions of Black people globally.

The 2025 Black History Month UK theme is "Standing Firm in Power and Pride", celebrating the resilience, strength, and commitment to progress within the Black community.

This year, the theme highlights the profound contributions made by Black people be they leaders, activists, or pioneers who have shaped history, while also looking towards a future of continued empowerment, unity, and growth. – Black History Month 2025

How to get involved with Black History Month 2025:

There are many ways to get involved with Black History Month, from taking the time to read and understand the importance of this month (for example: blackhistorymonth.org.uk), by attending local or virtual events (for example: Give Back Project Plymouth), to getting involved with SU initiatives and events this month:

Make an Inspirational Figure Submission

This month, we want to hear about who motivates and inspires you so we can share their story and celebrate them. Whether it's a student or staff member, we would love for you to make a submission so we can give them the recognition they deserve!

How does it work? You fill out our Inspirational Figure submission form, then we will contact the individual you have put forward and ask their permission for us to share their story and a photo of them. Their story will feature on our social media platforms and on our website on the Black History Month webpage.

Roots on the Roof: A Black History Month Celebration

On the 10th of October 2025 between 12pm and 2pm, join us on the SU roof for Roots on the Roof: a vibrant celebration of Black history, culture, and community, hosted by your SU Sabbatical Officers, Dindu and Kwaku.

This isn’t just an event—it’s an experience. Expect an afternoon filled with:

  • Quizzes & trivia to test your knowledge of Black history and culture
  • Interactive activities to connect students from all backgrounds
  • Conversation with your Sabbatical Officers

Black Heritage Day

On the 22nd October 2025, we invite all students to step into a celebration of legacy, creativity, and community at Black Heritage Day: a dynamic showcase of Black history and culture through art, enlightenment, expression, and conversation.

"Whether you're here to learn, celebrate, or connect, Black Heritage Day is a space for all students to come together and honour the richness of Black culture. Let’s celebrate the stories, the struggles, and the triumphs—loud, proud, and united." - SU President, Dindu.
