School of Arts, Design and Architecture School Rep Update - December

Written by: Steve Ailemen, ADA School Rep https://www.upsu.com/representation/representatives/artdesignarcschool/

In appreciation to all Course Reps for being elected the School Rep, I would say this is a great privilege. It is an avenue to work, learn and contribute. The progressive huge support that I am also receiving from Victoria Squire (Associate Head of School - Education and Student Experience) and Hannah Lord (Representation and Engagement Coordinator) have been immensely helpful in goals setting and implementation. I have also been empowered and enlightened through the various meetings I have attended with staff, students and programme committees.

Meetings I Have Attended

I have attended about 90% of the meetings scheduled since my appointment as ADA School Rep till date, including the Annual Student Meeting, STLQC, FTLQC’s, Course Rep meeting and drop-ins.

All these meetings have shown me a different perspective to representation and collectively been a source of empowerment to me. From the feedback, contributions and various suggestions of other attendees of the meetings, I have learnt how to discharge my duties as a rep in an academic context.

Facilities and Inductions

In the majority of all meetings I have attended since I became the ADA Rep, issues around facilities and the inductions to access them have constantly been discussed.

I have, therefore, challenged myself to see that all students have access to facilities and inductions are fluid. I will also be monitoring received feedback and their implementations.

While, it is noteworthy that some facilities are, as yet, undergoing reconstruction or reconfiguration of some sort, I would like to, on behalf of the School of Art, Design and Architecture staff and students, and the entire Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business, congratulate our school, University of Plymouth, for the completion and immediate functioning of Babbage Building. Our Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics now have adequate support for academic teamwork and creative innovations through the use of state of the arts research facilities in such an enabling environment.

Engaging With Course Reps

It has been a bit of a challenge getting response from Course Reps, however, by divine providence, I have been able to have face to face discussion with six reps across the School of Art, Design and Architecture. This is so encouraging at such a time as this when all our reps are loaded with academic commitments and deadlines.

The near future is bright and colorful and I look forward to a flourishing interaction with all reps that will strengthen all cohorts in the School of Art, Design and Architecture

Getting Course Reps To Attend Meetings

With support from Vicky Squire and ADA Support, I aim to encourage Course Reps attendance in future meetings so that they can provide feedback to staff.
