Purpose of Post:

  • To assist with the day-to-day management, operational delivery and commercial aspects of the Sports and Recreation facilities on campus.
  • Shift pattern working will be within the opening hours of Monday to Friday 07:15-22:00, and weekends 08:45-18:15.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervision of the Centre:

  • To take responsibility for operations within the Sports Centre when on shift.
  • Ensure the facilities are opened, closed and secured as determined by the operational programme.
  • Supervision of centre users and activities, ensuring all concerned observe the rules of the centre and UPSU safety procedures.
  • Monitor and help achieve operational and financial targets.
  • Ensure the facilities are opened, closed and secured as determined by the operational programme.
  • In an emergency, co-ordinate the evacuation of all buildings according to UPSU procedures.
  • To assist the Gym Manager with issues relating to Health and Safety including facilities, equipment, risk assessments and operating procedures.
  • To supervise administrative duties in relation to bookings and programmes as required.
  • To assist the Gym Manager to ensure that operations are compliant with all relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Promote the sport and recreation offer, encouraging participation in a wide range of activities.
  • To supervise and oversee casual staff/reception staff that may be on shift with them.
  • To carry out additional duties as appropriate as decided by the Gym Manager

Operational Sport duties:

  • In agreement with the Gym Manager take responsibility for a defined area of work, for example customer feedback / Injury Clinics / Timetables / Health and Wellbeing/ Rota/ shop/ as agreed and appropriate.
  • To conduct fitness inductions and assessments with new and existing customers.
  • To conduct personal training sessions within and outside working hours.
  • To prepare and deliver Health and Fitness related classes, at short notice following an instructor’s absence.
  • Conduct a variety of classes ensuring Health and Safety procedures are followed.
  • To attend to accidental injuries and incidents including the summoning of the police and emergency services as necessary and the completion of relevant reports.
  • Engage in health, fitness and wellbeing campaigns as appropriate, supporting both the Student Officers and Plymouth University.
  • Prepare and maintain sports equipment including: setting up, issue and recovery of equipment as required for activities, classes and hire.

Administration and Customer Service duties:

  • Deliver consistent excellent customer service and provide professional, efficient and cheerful presence at all times.
  • Support the control of admissions and take responsibility for removal / exclusion in order to ensure operations are efficient.
  • General cleaning and maintenance duties, repair and replacement of equipment as directed and according to maintenance schedules.
  • To supervise and adhere to UPSU financial procedures.
  • Assist the Gym Manager in marketing the department to ensure that the sport and recreation offer is promoted to students, staff, community groups and individuals.
  • Assist the Gym Manager in obtaining and utilising member and user feedback to drive the delivery of operations.
  • Attend internal and external training as required to ensure knowledge is current.
  • To manage the booking system and make sure all bookings and accounts are up to date along with supervising any casual staff that may use these programmes.
  • Dealing with customer enquiries through various channels, including social media.

  • Pay Scale: Grade 2, starting salary £23,040 per annum

Time Scale:
