Do you speak more than one language? Your skills could change someone’s life.

Every week, refugees, asylum seekers, and vulnerable migrants arrive in Plymouth seeking safety, stability, and a sense of belonging. Many face language barriers that make everyday tasks overwhelming — and that’s where you can make a real difference.

The British Red Cross – Plymouth is looking for student volunteers who can help bridge communication gaps and provide compassionate support to people starting new lives in the UK.


?? Why Your Language Skills Matter

For someone navigating a new country, being understood can mean everything.
Your ability to speak another language can help people feel safe, heard, and welcomed into our community.

Languages that are especially helpful include:
Arabic, Amharic, Farsi, Dari, Bengali, Kurdish, Pashto, Ukrainian, Russian, Tigrinya, Urdu, Somali, Mandarin, Spanish, French — but all languages are welcome.


?? What You’ll Be Doing

Depending on your interests and availability, you may support with:

  • Conversational interpretation
  • Helping people access essential services
  • Supporting caseworkers during appointments
  • Welcoming new arrivals
  • Assisting with social activities and integration support
