First Weekend Information + Kit List

Plan

We will be meeting outside of stores (Next to Jakes takeaway by student village - https://maps.app.goo.gl/mn8xsg9QCXZB8jmc6) Saturday morning - exact times TBC. You will be going straight to your activity for the day, either climbing (Hopefully outside if the weather is good!!!), hIking, or caving.

Accomidation

We will be staying in the dewerstone cottage in Dartmoor. If you have a hut ticket you will be staying in bunks - there is no bedding provided so bring sleeping bags and pillow cases. If you have camping tickets you will be staying in right by the hut - tents will be  provided if needed along with roll mats and sleeping bags.

Food

Breakfast will be provided Sunday morning (Will be Porridge!!!) as well as dinner on Saturday. Please Bring enough food for lunches for both days

For the hut & camping:

In a separate bag to be left at the hut during the day, please pack the following:

  • Sleeping bag (we can provide)

  • Roll mat (For campers)

  • Wash kit and towel (the hut does have showers!)

  • Sleeping clothes

  • Pillow (optional)

  • Alcohol (as much or as little as you want)

  • Plastic bag to put any wet kit in for the journey home.

  • Hut shoes (crocs/ sliders/ slippers)

  • Headtorch (Especially for campers!!!)

General Activities:

  • Rucksack 20-30 litres

  • Dry sack or a couple of bin bags/large ziplocks to keep stuff dry

  • Waterproof jacket

  • Waterproof trousers

  • Fleece or warm jumper

  • Warm jacket/Spare warm layer

  • Clothes for the activities each day (i.e. base layer/wicking top and walking trousers/leggings + warm layers)

  • A warm hat and gloves

  • Water bottle (a couple of litres of water)

  • Lunch for each day and snacks

  • Headtorch/torch

  • Boots/other appropriate footwear

  • Any personal medication such as inhalers

  • Spare warm layers

  • Sunglasses and suncream if it’s sunny

  • Cash (For pub or caves)

Please no jeans, cotton t-shirts or cotton hoodies! You will be cold sitting at the crag climbing, cold walking, and cold when you get out of a cave!

Caving:

We’ll provide you with all of the main caving gear you will need including a helmet, head torch, undersuit, oversuit and belt, but please bring the following:

  • Clothes to wear under your caving suits you don’t mind getting a bit wet and muddy. Synthetic sports clothing is best (i.e. a top and leggings) Consider wearing a fleece or thermals if you get cold easily. Cotton is not ideal as it doesn’t keep you warm when wet. (these will likely get wet and muddy)

  • Wellies (we can provide if you don’t have them)

  • Thick socks to wear under wellies

  • A pocket sized snack to take into the cave

  • Any personal medication

  • A bag you can put wet and muddy clothing into after

  • A towel

  • A spare change of warm clothing (including underwear) for when you’re out of the cave

  • At least 2 AA batteries

  • A couple of pounds cash may be needed for cave access

Caving:

We will provide all climbing gear needed but bring anything you have got especially shoes, harnesses or helmets

If you have any questions or need any advice on kit, just send me (Heather Croker) or Kit sec (Hazel Pearcey) a message.
