What motivated you to run for a Sabbatical Officer role and why do you think you would be a good Sabbatical Officer?

To be up front, I’ve never done something like this before. My experience however includes 5 years at this university, and I am therefore incredibly invested in student life. I care deeply about the relationship between the students and their faculties, and want to fight for students to achieve the best they can. I believe that by supporting every student, every student can reach their potential.

Why is the Sabbatical Officer role important?

Sabbatical Officers provide that key communication between us as the students, and the university. The VP of Education should stand for bettering the student experience and fighting for those who need it. University is stressful enough with trying to balance the work load, student finance, and having some semblance of a life! The VP of Education is there to fight in our corner to ensure we achieve the best we can. We all pay an extraordinary amount of money to be here after all.

What three words would your friends use to describe you?

Hard-working, determined, honest

If you could change one thing about the University, what would that be?

I was here pre-, during, and after COVID. But we’re still feeling the effects of this time as waiting times for appeals are at an all-time high. We’re also now being affected by the strikes. I stand with our lecturers and believe strongly in the right to strike, but I think we could work to ensure the students do not suffer for the mistakes of the university.

If you could change one thing about the Students' Union, what would it be?

I believe that there needs to be more ease of communication between the SU and the student body. When myself and others have attempted to contact those who could help with issues, there were some breakdowns in communication. I would endeavour to clear communication lines, and make it easier for students to either contact Officers directly, or have clear signposting as to who to contact. This would prevent delays and frustration when both can make a problem worse.

Who do you draw most inspiration from and why?

Outing myself a little but weirdly my mum? She was a single-parent raising two kids and working 6 days a week. The fact she kept us in line and facilitated our success while holding everything else together astounds me. She also makes the best banana bread…

What is your proudest moment so far and why?

My proudest moment, as cliché as it sounds, was graduating from my undergrad last year. I didn’t go the traditional route of GCSEs, A-Levels, then onto university. I actually dropped out of my A-Levels at 17 and trained in hospitality instead. However, after realising how much I truly missed academia, I applied for a foundation on a whim. I got it, got graduated with a First in Criminology, and now I’m completing my Masters. I never thought at 17 that I would be able to achieve all of this.
