Rita Pinto

Hi, I’m Rita and I’m running for VP Wellbeing and Diversity because I want to help the SU to be a fully inclusive environment. I’ve joined several clubs including swimming and surf lifesaving and have also been involved in RAG challenges as I cycled from London to Paris raising money for Breast Cancer Now. My active involvement in SU activities and societies let me experience the equality values the union defends.

I have experience working in management roles in international events where diversity was encouraged and celebrated. I believe the skills I’ve developed make me an ideal candidate for this role.

Fully inclusive culture

  • I will organise an international market per term where societies celebrating different cultures can sell traditional dishes, with the profits going to an agreed charity. I will promote LGBT+ events on campus and aim to get sponsorships that will allow to take interested students to events such as the National Student Pride, which hosts the UK’s largest LGBT+ inclusive careers fair.

Wellbeing/ mental health

  • I will aim to arrange free activities in the style of taster sessions during exam season, delivered by students who will be able to log these as volunteering hours, given the importance of sport for mental health and wellbeing.
  • I will promote the new Speak Up tool created by the university to enable students to report abuse, harm or hate. I will also work alongside the Night Patrol society which provides welfare to students on nights out by increasing first aid resources.

Underrepresented students

  • I will aim to improve the student experience for parents, carers and mature students, who represent more than 30% of the student body, by creating a dynamic network and adapting already existing spaces so they can be fitted with study and play areas for young children.

Thank you!
