Hi, I’m Dan, a 4th year Electrical Engineering student.
I’m passionate about our Students’ Union. Since university fees have started rising, it’s become increasingly important to have a stronger voice and work together to ensure we’re getting the education and experience we’re paying for.
As Union Council chair, I want to encourage discussion and debate among all students to ensure that the union is representing all students effectively and offering the services that will empower students to success in the future.
My main effort as UC Chair over the next year would be:
1. Empower students to express their voice
The Students’ Union is all about representing you effectively, and it’s important that all students have a voice. I want all students to feel comfortable to be able to come to any member of the Union Council to propose or discuss ideas, and to that end, I am committed to helping/leading campaigns alongside the Sabbatical Officers to ensure this.
2. Remaining fair & Democratic
The student body is incredibly diverse. It’s important that we represent every one that is apart of UPSU and that decisions made by the council reflect the diverse population we have here. I will ensure this by managing discussion effectively, making sure everyone has a voice at council meetings and supporting liberation groups, ensuring the voice of the minority is not silenced by the majority.
3. Transparency
Far too often students feel left out of the conversation. As chair, I promise to do my best to promote the activities of the Union Council and get more students involved, as well as advertising the minutes of the meetings as much as possible. I hope that this will encourage debate and make the Union Council more representative of the student body.
