I've been thinking about what it means to be a school representative and I came up with the following characteristics:
- Good communication
- Determined
- Reliable
- Knowledgeable of the university
- Approachable
Over the last two years in Plymouth, I have learned more than I ever imagined, not only from lectures but from the people and experiences. I improved my communication skills by giving presentations and pushing myself to meet new people. I have shown determination by constantly challenging myself to improve. I am reliable and organised, coping well with the responsibilities at university: coursework, societies, volunteering and more, as I’m sure every student can relate to. As a third-year, I feel I have a good knowledge of the university and have used a number of the services. However, if I ever felt unsure about something I would always try to find it out. Being approachable is one of the most important qualities of a representative. It’s important people feel able to talk to you. My family moved around a lot when I was a child and I have experienced what it is like to be the new person and the need to have someone to make you feel welcome. I also remember my first few weeks at university and I try to be the friendly face in the crowd.
I am looking to improve inter-year interactions, especially for first years who may need more support. My suggestion would be to put in place drop-in sessions run by second and third-year students to help first years with settling into their courses and for anyone to ask general questions in a more informal environment.
If you’ve read this far I’d like to add this final note. I am always open to listening to your suggestions to work towards an ever improving university.
