ALEX MOCKRIDGE

I'm running because, as a president of a student society, I feel that I am connected with the student body, beyond my own peer group. I also have experience of taking forward the views of students and articulating them to others. I am a politics and criminology student, who strongly believes in representation and democratic process, and I will do all I can to accurately take forward the views of Plymouth university students.

1) Representing the views of students at the university of Plymouth

I will ensure that I consult with the student body, as well as our elected Student union representatives, to make sure I go to conference representing the whole university, not just myself.

2) A reasonable NUS for the reasonable majority

The NUS represent a wide range of areas from protecting LGBT+ students, to campaigning on our university's environmental policy. I want to ensure that going into this year we take a reasoned and logical approach that represents most accurately the majority of students, and looks after everyone so we can all feel safe and welcome on campus. In particular, I would like to see a focus over the next year on the cost of living and maintenance grants - two areas where I feel NUS can really make a difference.

3) NUS Awareness Campaigns

From council tax exemptions to the NUS extra card, the National Union of Students has a history of delivering for students. But the NUS doesn't always do a fantastic job of shouting about its successes. I'd like to change that by running a campaign in the run up to Conference to show you what NUS does. Too often students can feel as though the NUS works behind closed doors, but the job of a delegate is to bring that process to you, from hearing your ideas all the way through to telling you exactly what is being done with them, for you.

4) Plymouth University ideas, national actions

Our Students' Union has run some brilliant campaigns, and I think we should take the success we've had with them on campus to the national level. I'll submit motions for national conference to persuade NUS to pass these as national policies and make them NUS campaigns.
