The gardening society are working to make the campus a greener space, connect students with nature, and grow some food.
On Wednesday 22nd March we planted seeds in modules and seed trays for members to look after while seeds establish, with the goal of transplanting them into new planters around campus after the spring break. This was in collaboration with the Wildlife and Ecology society.
We planted local and organic seeds: spinach (Matador), spring onions (White Lisbon), kale (Nero di Toscana), chard (five colours), lettuce (little gem "Maureen"), courgette (cocozella), and nasturtiums (trailing).
We have plans in the works for growing productive food and flowering plants at three locations on campus: Kirby Place gardens, Endsleigh Place gardens, and the student growing patch by the CobBauge building.
We hope to encourage and nurture nature on campus by attracting pollinators and increasing the biodiversity of plants available to them, with the plan of using no dig beds and companion planting methods.
Our members are a mix of knowledgeable and new gardeners with our events being a great place to learn about something new, get your hands dirty, and reconnect with nature.
