Are you up for giving pole a try this discovery week?

For the first time ever, UPPDC are running some special taster sessions on discovery week so you can give pole a try before the next University year or just for fun!

We are running three sessions on the 27th of May, the spots available are:

• 12pm to 1pm

• 1pm to 2pm

• 2pm to 3pm

Each session has a maximum of twelve people. Tickets cost £3.50.

Please make sure to bring some water and some shorts and t-shirt/sports wear. Yoga matts are also recommended for warm ups but not mandatory.

Grab your water shoes from the Able Sisters, SWITCHUP your curiosity to the max, and keep those eyes peeled for the most suspiciously photogenic fish 🐠✨

SwitchUP is heading to the aquarium for Aquarium Bingo. Whether you’re here for the marine biology, the photo ops, or to crush your opponents in the artful war of bingo, this is your moment!

That’s right- while we wander through glowing jellyfish, lurking sharks, and those oddly smug stingrays, you’ll be ticking off your bingo card like a marine detective on a mission. Spot it, mark it, celebrate it (quietly… we’re still in an aquarium).

We’ll be going as a group, which means laughs, chaos (the good kind...maybe), and a hugely discounted ticket price if you book in time. The catch? You’ll need to purchase your ticket by 12th May to be included in the group booking deal.

Tickets for students are usually £23 for students, but with us for this event, they're only £5.50!

So gather your friends, sharpen your spotting skills, and prepare to become the undisputed champion of fish-based observation.

Come watch our upcoming showcase, Summer Solstice, in RLB main hall on the 8th May!

Showcase is an event for members to perform a routine and show of the moves and skills they've learnt across the year. There will also be guest performances from local professionals, including national champion Clare.

This year, we are raising money for Devon and Cornwall refugee support who are an incredible charity that provides hands-on essential support to refugees, ensuring that refugees can enter and stay in Plymouth and be safe. They offer legal, housing, financial, and health advice and support, food programmes, social activities, and ESOL classes.

Doors open 6 pm. Online tickets cost £5 for students and £7 for non students. Tickets will be more expensive on the door, so grab yours while you can!

By pre-paying £3, you are confirming that you would like to volunteer during the allocated Tuesday slot and will receive your produce.

All of the money goes directly back to FareShare South West - the charity that supplies UPSU with the surplus food and funds the cost of running their service. To learn more about FareShare, and if you are interested in volunteering there, visit fareshare.org.uk.

The prepayments are non-refundable. If you have paid but cannot attend your volunteering session, you will need to find somebody else to volunteer in your place.

Please note that we do not know which produce is going to be in the boxes until the morning of. Payments are non-refundable. If you have not prepaid, a box has not been reserved for you so you will not receive produce.

There is a limit of 20 boxes per week - on a first come, first served basis to whoever has prepaid.

The veg box scheme, in its current form, will be coming to an end, with the final collection on 19th May. We’re hoping to restart in September, but for that to happen the co-op must become either a student-led volunteering project or a society. Without that, it won’t be able to continue.

Help us keep the co-op running!

As a co-op, this veg box scheme relies on its members to run and shape it. We need people to come along at 11:30am on Tuesdays to help set up tables and boxes, sort the food, and clear down afterward. It’s a short, simple commitment—and you’ll still be saving money on your weekly food shop.

For the scheme to remain sustainable, we also need to:

Sell all 20 boxes each week to cover the cost of food from Fareshare Southwest and prevent it going to landfill
Start setup promptly at 11:30am
Ensure all boxes are collected by 1:00pm

Come join us during our Friday hangouts for some gaming on the big screens in the Rolle Building from 7pm-10pm! No Switch, consoles or controllers are needed for any of our sessions, we have our own consoles and plenty of controllers, but if you do have any please bring it along! We have access to lots of big screens and smaller TVs, so feel free to bring docks along too.

In this discovery week session SwitchUP will be bringing all of its consoles to give you a taste of what we have to offer next year! This typically includes but isn’t limited to Switches, Wiis, PlayStation 2s, Xboxs, GameCubes, and Wii Us. We also do a lot more than providing consoles every Friday: we organise teams for NSE and Cross-Uni tournaments; run monthly-ish tournaments (3 per term) in separate rooms during Friday hangouts; host craft events for special occasions like Halloween and Valentines; organise joint socials with a range of societies so other students can give gaming a go and our members can try out and learn new skills; prepare special one off outings like Animal Crossing Aquarium Bingo, gaming conventions, bonfire night, TWIST (board game cafe), cinema visits and more; plan one off events on campus like Nintendo themed D&D, quizzes and tournaments; and organise other fun socials around Plymouth including pub socials (SwitchUP does not endorse drinking). So even if this discovery week session isn’t quite what you’re looking for, there are plenty of other events SwitchUP organises that you can get involved in next year!

We aim to be as welcoming and supportive as possible, so if you have any worries about accessibility or are just feeling nervous about getting involved get in contact with us via our social media/email and we’ll do our best to help! In the past we have met people in a familiar spot on campus to walk to the session together, or we have met outside the Rolle building, or just outside the room so you don’t have to walk in alone. We can make sure you’re able to get involved by saying hi, having a chat and teaching you how to play some of our favourite games! If that's not your vibe, and you just want to solo grind some Zelda or Mario Kart time trials that's also completely fine!

Snacks and drinks are welcome, being mindful that some of our members have allergies, as long as everything is left clean and tidy, and help reorganising the room after the session is very welcome, we hope to see you there!

Design your own movie for charity! We will be fundraising for Sportability - a chairty that gives sporting opportunities for people with paralysis including kayaking and canoeing!

Join us for a University of Plymouth Rowing Club Open Day at Totnes – the perfect chance to give rowing a go in a relaxed, friendly environment.

You’ll have the opportunity to get out on the water in our boats and try out the ergs, with guidance from experienced rowers and coaches throughout the day. Whether you’ve never rowed before or just want to get back into it, this is a great way to see what the club is all about.

We’ll provide free lunch, so you can make a full day of it, meet new people, and enjoy time by the river. It’s a brilliant day out, with a mix of activity, socialising, and trying something new.

No experience needed – just bring yourself and give it a go.

Special Olympics offers a multisport club each week for people with intellectual (learning) disabilities aged 16 and above.

Volunteers will assist in the running of several sports such as Boccia, Badminton, Short Map Bowls, Football, Tag Rugby, Kwik Cricket, Basketball, New Age Kurling, Indoor Athletics, Gym, and Table Tennis, which are played, to ensure variety and give everybody a chance to try out different sports.

Special Olympics also works with a Plymouth-based charity called Plymouth Mayflower Specials, whose values align with those of Special Olympics.

Free transport is provided to and from campus.

Please purchase a free ticket to reserve your space. A receipt from purchasing your free ticket will tell you all of your event details and where to meet - this will be an email confirmation.

This type of activity requires physical activity and sports. Please ensure you wear appropriate athletic clothing or clothing that will not hinder your participation in the sport. For example, leggings, tracksuit bottoms, long shorts, and t-shirts.

The pool sessions are the perfect way to develop your paddling skills whilst in a warm and safe environment. 

Each session is 1 hour, run by a friendly and qualified instructor.

Each session will have a different focus which will be published on the members group chat on the Monday before each session.

You will need to book on for the session that you wish to attend.

Things to bring:

Towel

Swimwear (some people wear rash vests and shorts to keep warm as you will be in and out of the water a lot)

Plastic bag for wet swimwear

Dry clothes for afterwards

Drink of water

Optionals:

Googles

Nose clip

Any of your own paddle equipment (let us know if you are brining your own boat)

The session takes place at The Life Centre, located in Central Park and is about a 20/25 minute walk from the SU roof. There are also buses that go up past The Life Centre. If you require any assistance to get to and from pool sessions e.g. a lift or someone to walk with, please do not hesitate to contact with one of our committee members or email us at (plymcanoeandkayak@gmail.com) and we will try our best to arrange something.

Please arrive at the pool at least 10 minutes before the session starts in your swimwear, ready to go. Thank you!

During discovery week, instead of our usual gardening session we will be running a plant repotting workshop. This is to give you a chance to provide some TLC to your houseplants before leaving for the summer. Wether you dont have the pots, the soil, or even a plant to begin with, we will supply anything you might need to help your plant along.

This event is FREE and you can bring your own plant along, or we will have a limited number of cuttings avaiable. If you are hoping to get a new plant, we ask that you purchase a FREE TICKET, just so we can ensure that everyone can get one.

We will be there from 1.30 til 3pm, so feel free to pop by at a time that suits you.

End of Year Celebration 🎉

Join us for a special evening at The Dome in Plymouth as we come together to celebrate the end of the university year. After all the hard work, deadlines, and exams, this is your chance to unwind, enjoy a great meal, and spend time with friends in a beautiful venue.

The dress code is smart/casual, so feel free to dress up! Just come as your best self and enjoy the night.

Payment Information

We’ve chosen to do things a little differently this year to make the event more accessible and ensure people of all budgets are able to attend.

To secure your place at the End of Year Celebration, a £10 SU ticket is required. This acts as your deposit and guarantees your space at the event. The £10 will then be deducted from your final bill on the night, with the remaining balance for your meal and drinks paid by yourself at the venue.

This approach gives you flexibility in what you spend while still guaranteeing your place at the event. You will receive an email with the menu, as we require a pre-order by 22nd May.

Please note that spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended. Ticket sales will close on May 21st.

Guided Beryl Bike Ride (02/06/2026, 13:00)

There are 6 spaces available for you to jump on a beryl bike and have a guided ride.

You can use this session to learn how to safely use the beryl bikes to navigate to one of our cities most amazing points of interest!

The meeting point is the Beryl Bike point outside of Roland Levinsky Building

The session will be led by Plymotion, and you will have access to a beryl bike for free for the entire hour!

All you will need to do is book a free space, download the beryl bike app, and you are good to go!

Please wear comfy clothes and sturdy shoes. Please note helmets are optional.

As spaces are extremely limited, please only book onto this if you are able to attend.
