Here at the yacht club, we are always pushing for ways to become more environmentally friendly and “green”. Marine pollution has in recent years been a topic that has grown exponentially and is finally being acknowledged. Plastics in our waters are causing widespread damage to the oceans and efforts to reduce this has made a good start. However, at least 14 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year, and plastic makes up 80% of all marine debris found from surface waters to deep-sea sediments. Many marine species ingest or are entangled by plastic debris, which causes severe injuries and death. Especially over the covid period, masks and other covid related items have made their way into the oceans. Therefore, as a yacht club, we look to provide some help in this matter. On the 8th of December, there will be a Marina Clean in conjunction with MDL Marinas at QAB. Hopefully we can add to the ocean plastics effort and remove the unwanted debris from the waters we are all using to strive for a plastic free Plymouth Sound!
