Join our volunteer team where we encourage and support people aged 16+ with intellectual (learning) disabilities to join in and participate in the various sports.- Please wear sport appropriate clothes - Proof of double vaccination and mask required!
The focus is on what the organisation's athletes CAN DO. It is becoming apparent that the Athletes are gaining more and more confidence in their abilities after having attended 'Wednesday Club' sessions. At these sessions, student volunteers help to encourage and support people aged 16+ with intellectual (learning) disabilities to join in and participate in the various sports on offer. There will be opportunities to lead activities as well.
No good at sport, no problem, there is no commitment to play sports and you can still come along just to chat with the members and encourage them in the activities.
No previous experience is necessary and taxis are provided to and from the event free of charge. Volunteers are asked to wear clothes suitable for sporting activities, especially shoes suitable for running and jumping around in. Don't forget to bring some water with you to stay hydrated after all the sports!
If you would like to receive regular updates from the project, a weekly email will be sent to students who register their interest in the opportunity via this volunteering tool box.
Some weekly games that happen can include Badminton, Bowls, football and Boccia.
Refreshments aren't provided but there is a café onsite that is open during the evening. Payments can only be taken in cash. There are also vending machines onsite.
Meet us at the Hive in the SU at 5.30pm and we will taxi over to the event together. We should arrive back at the SU at 8pm via taxi.
You can make your own way there if you want. The event is held at YMCA Plymouth, Honicknowle Lane, Plymouth, PL5 3NG
