My motivation for applying for this role is simple: Academic institutions have the capability of being at the forefront of climate mitigation efforts and, with the aid of our student voice, the University of Plymouth can become a powerful force in the environmental movement, both locally and on a wider scale.

Our University has already gained global recognition as a leading centre for research into marine litter. Last year, we ranked 14th in the Guardian newspaper's ‘Green League’. We, the students, have also been heard through the launch of successful campaigns such as the ‘Ditch the Disposables’ movement. This has already been a great success; plastic straws have been removed from our campus and students have saved money by using reusable cups at on-campus cafe.

I am an activist by nature and my main focus is the movement against single-use plastics. Last year, in the campaign which I instigated during my first year, 300+ of you voted in favour of banning the sale of single-use plastic water bottles on campus. It remains my priority to push this campaign through and to aid the smooth and successful transition to the eventual goal which is a University free of single-use plastics.

I will also push to improve waste management. Food waste is becoming a growing concern on university campuses, I aim to propose a composting scheme for our food waste. I also will campaign for more recycling areas, ensuring all rubbish points on campus have a recycling option.

As an environmental science student, I hear much talk about how our University can be more sustainable. I believe I will effectively represent your opinions and ideas to those who matter making an indelible mark that will help to drive the changes we all want - and need - to see.
