Who is RON and why is he standing in all the elections?
RON stands for Re-Open Nominations. ViP believes that you, the voter, should always have the choice to make a positive vote, even if you don’t agree with the policies of any of the candidates standing. This means that even those candidates who appear to be standing alone for a post still need to convince you that they are the best person for the job. ViP would urge you to consider this carefully. Don’t be prepared to vote for someone to represent you if you genuinely don’t think they are the best person for the job.
April Brown - President
I would like to be the new President of ViP as I feel I have the relevant and necessary experience and enthusiasm to develop and progress our volunteer group. I began volunteering with ViP in my first year and then took over as Monkey Sanctuary Project Leader in my second year. From the Monkey Sanctuary I have gained lots of experience through organising a project and volunteers from when, to how, to safety, and meeting new people along the way. I have also started fundraising for both the Vip and the Monkey Sanctuary though pub quiz games and cake sales, trying to raise some money whilst having fun at the same time!
Currently I am the Admin Assistant for the volunteer department which means I have an extensive knowledge of the databases and helping with supporting and organising projects other than my own, a key role in being President.
In addition to project leading I am a cyber mentor through the Beat Bullying scheme where I online mentor students from schools and colleges across the country through their bullying difficulties to try and provide support to them.
The volunteer department has recently begun a new steering project aimed at encouraging students with disabilities to start volunteering with the reassurance that we have the tooling and personnel means to support their needs; I am currently the only committee member to be a part of this. Through the steering group I have become aware of other areas of volunteering that still requires some development and also tried my hand at ‘buddying’ with volunteers who have needed support. Through this program I have gained access to disability equality training.
I would like for you to vote for me to be president of the ViP because I really enjoy volunteering and I believe I could involve more new volunteers into the experience. I think my experience could be applied to the role and develop and progress ViP for the better.
Jasminder Singh-Khaira - President
I would like to be President of the ViP committee next year, as I am very passionate about volunteering and have been in voluntary work consistently for almost 5 years now, and have been involved in many different areas of work; from working in special needs schools to conservation work in Madagascar! I also have experience of volunteer management when I was the Volunteer Co-ordinator for Amnesty International Youth (NI). I was an active volunteer during my first year at Uni, and in my second year joined the committee as Project Leader and Secretary; I hope to continue to develop my leadership and organizational skills as President. I believe we can do so much more as a committee to take this society to the next level and I endeavour to commit time and effort to "make it happen" if i become President.
Vice President
Ashani Smoker (Laura) – Vice President
Just wanted to put in my official application for vice-president of VIP 2010/2011. Throughout my school career i have held positions of authority: eg. senior prefect and student council member, president of the Interact Club (affiliated with Rotary International) and founder vice-president of the Interfaith Society, all in my final year. Since coming to University, VIP has been my main extracurricular activity and having spent a year on the committee already I have experience and dedication and am very excited about leading the society to bigger and better things in the next academic year. Fingers crossed!
Alexander Mcleod (Roddy) Vice President
Hey, I’m Roddy and I want to run for Vice President of the Volunteers in Plymouth (ViP) Committee. Ive acted as Treasurer for the ViP Committee for the past year as well as one of the ViP Project Leaders and now I would like to take on a bigger and more influential role within the Society.
I really enjoy volunteering and helping people so I would like to take up this roll to allow for more of the University Students to get as much pleasure as possible through their volunteering as well as to encourage more people to take up Volunteering. I intend to work hard, like I do with all commitments I've taken on in the past. Through my efforts for the committee I will work to meet the needs of the ViP Committee, ViP Project Leaders and most importantly all the Volunteers.
I believe that as a team member of the ViP Committee I will be able to act as a strong support force for all ViP members. As Vice President I believe that in partnership with the President, we will be able to encourage the entire committee to work hard and as one for the interest of the entire ViP.
Barnaby Smyth – Vice-President
My name is Barney Smyth and I am a second year geography student. I am very keen to stand for Vice-President position within the Volunteering Committee, as I am passionate towards the society, and want to help with projects I have been fortunate to experience this year.
So far I have been involved with Landmatters Sustainable Communities, Moor Trees, Moor View Park, Looe Monkey Sanctuary, Plymouth Station Project and Cyber Mentoring. All of which I have enjoyed thoroughly, particularly Landmatters, which is a favourite.
To show my dedication towards volunteering, I am enrolled on the LTV001 (Learning Through Volunteering) Module, and am due to complete the first Vinspired award (vfifty).
Throughout my two years at University, within UPSU, I am a member of the Sailing and Powerboat Club, Climate Change & Amnesty International Societies, and have been elected on to the UPSU Student Parliament as an Independent Representative, to represent 30,000 students and uphold the democratic principles of the Students Union.
I have also have two years worth of committee experience with the GeogSoc (Geography Society), but fancy a change next year!
If I am fortunate enough to be selected, I will actively strive to achieve what people want within the Volunteering Society. I am a go-getter and feel I’ve got the potential to enhance the society and bring many positive aspects to it.
I am lively, energetic, and passionate about everything I do, so please have confidence in me and vote me on to the committee!
Thanks!
General Officer
Adriano Portaluri
I am currently the General Officer and would love to continue the role next year. I have been involved in many volunteering projects in the past, such as a volunteer placement in Brazil in an educational eco village. Here I had many different jobs; ranging from cleaning, to co-ordinating working beets, and leading group excursions. I also participated in four consecutive years in assisting the sick and elderly in Lourdes. Furthermore, I have had work as a Support Worker for a down syndrome person, which involved high levels of responsibility for his safety, as well as for his development as I was helping him to become more independent, and less reliant on his parents.
As G.O this year I assisted the president in her roles, where she was not able to attend. Similarly, I have been involved with addressing solving issues and conflicts of interest between volunteers. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as General Officer and would love to carry it on next year!
Publicity and Promotions
Kirti Ramesh
I’d like to nominate myself for a position to manage publicity and promotions next year. This is something that I think can do really well. I’ve always passed my love of volunteering to others and gotten quite a few people to join this year and I’m sure given the opportunity and resources I’ll do a great job next year.
Since I’ve become project leader of Sustainable Communities, I’ve talked to people who have been volunteering at our projects and made sure that they become regulars. Being Project Leader and listening to volunteers last year has taught me a lot that I can put into doing a great job with this role. I tend to get along with everybody and include everyone which I think is a major benefit to this role. If people aren’t sure about volunteering, I’m absolutely confident that I can convince them otherwise. I’ve always been committed to volunteering and I have no doubts that if voted in that I’d give everything to promoting ViP.
I’d really appreciate if you considered me for publicity and promotions next year.
Before I finish I’d like to this take this opportunity to thank everyone that I’ve worked with this year for the great memories and fun times
Safety Officer
Conor Reid
I would like to nominate myself for Safety Officer, I feel that with working with environmental projects, experiencing countless risk assessments with my course, completing my First Aid course this year and being the First Aider for Zoological Society, Beach Clean and Igomango, I have gained the experience to fulfil this role.
Moor Trees Project Leader
James Groves
I've been a committed member of moor trees for 2 years now, and have aided coordinating larger groups whenever I’ve been needed, and as a result I would love to be the project leader next year. Although my primary ambitions lie within moor trees, if I am unsuccessful with leading moor trees, I also have keen interests in other projects, and would consider taking on a different role in another volunteer project if I was needed.
