► Student Volunteer Safety Co-ordinator
What does the Student Volunteer Safety Co-ordinator do?
Student safety is a really important part of what we do at the University of Plymouth SU. The Union likes to promote a ‘can do’ approach, and if possible will try to accommodate any activities students want to get involved with. These obviously have to be safe, but we recognise that risk is an enjoyable part of life and sometimes cannot be removed from activity without some of the enjoyment being compromised. We recognise that safety issues can sometimes seem daunting and unrelated to the activities planned. Our aim is to make safety information accessible, easy to understand and user friendly.
Annual paperwork is completed regarding safety, this takes the form of an annual risk assessment undertaken by club safety officers. Training is provided to make this as pain free as possible and to give safety officers all the information they need to oversee their club or societies activities. In addition, support and advice is available in respect of all other aspects of student safety, in particular trips, residential and tours. Also if clubs or societies are planning an event then safety information and advice is available to make it safe and successful.
Students volunteering with the Students' Union also have their voluntary work risk assessed. We work with volunteer placement providers to make sure that students are not put at risk in the course of volunteering and that their experience is safe and enjoyable.
Student volunteer safety co-ordinator is situated in the Hive and any student can drop in to discuss safety concerns.
